Bar Chart: Upcoming 20 Days of Miramichi Hotel Rates

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Miramichi, NB discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Miramichi hotel for each day and each star rating category.

Miramichi is the largest city in the northern portion of New Brunswick within Canada. It sits at the mouth of the Miramichi River just as it enters Miramichi Bay. The Miramichi Valley is one of the longest in New Brunswick and brings plenty of beauty to the area.

This city wasn't formed until 1995 as two towns (Newcastle and Chatham) as well as several smaller communities around it were forced together. The region was home to members of the Mi'kmaq First Nation before European settlement, and then became part of a French colony that was made up of a fort and trading post.

Miramichi was a base point for many aspects of the French and Indian war and has an interesting history in Scottish immigration as well as the Irish. There was a battle there during the American Revolutionary War and, like many smaller towns, there was a large forest fire in 1825 that destroyed the community. This fire, however, was one of the worst in North American history.

Today, the area economy is built on mining, fishing, and forestry, but there are also sectors of customer contact centers, tourism, and manufacturing. The largest company in the area was the Repap paper mill, until it was closed in 2000 and reopened in 2013 in a more forest-friendly manner.

The natives in the area speak English, though some of them have a vernacular that is best described as Maritime English, which can be hard for outsiders to understand. There are plenty of local festivals that visitors can enjoy over the year including the Miramichi Folksong Festival, the annual Pow-wows, the Miramichi Scottish Festival, and more.

When Should Travelers Visit Miramichi, NB?

The average temperature in New Brunswick can vary dramatically from one season to the next. Temperatures are generally cold for half the year with rain and snow possible through much of the year. The warmest time to visit this area is July and August followed by June. You can expect temperatures to average around 77 Fahrenheit during the day and 55 at night.

If you prefer dry weather, which many travelers do, the best shot is March, September, and August. The lowest chance of missing snow and rain is in September. If you want snow, it's likely to be deepest in March, which is the best time to ski. December and March are also very humid months.

The wind is usually calm in the area so you don't have to worry about bad hair days. Even on 'bad' wind days, it is more like a gentle breeze compared to other locations. The least crowded month is in December so you can grab great deals on hotels during that time. Hotels are most expensive in July and August when more people want to travel to the area, but using discounts and planning in advance can help with those prices as well.

What Reasons Are There to Visit Miramichi, NB?

While Miramichi is the largest city on the New Brunswick Acadian cost, it's not a typical tourist stop for those looking to travel to somewhere new for adventures. The staff on-site can tell the fascinating story of the Mi'kmaw people who inhabited the area for 3000 years. There are interactive displays on history and culture throughout the park. Visitors also enjoy the walking trails and outdoor adventures as well as world-class salmon fishing on the nearby river.

If you have any Irish in your background, visiting Miramichi can be extra special. It is known as the Irish capital of Canada and is home to a large Irish festival over the summer months. It's a primarily English-speaking area, but it's right in the middle of the coast, so it's a great stopping point if you are exploring on one side or the other. You're only half an hour away from white sand beaches and whether you go north or south, there's more beauty to be seen and enjoyed.

If you have to come to Miramichi for business, that's reason enough. If you don't have that reason pushing you to the destination, this location is a great destination spot. You might want to come up with several reasons to visit, because it's worth the trip for any family.
