The Tampa Museum of Art is located in Downtown Tampa, Florida. The museum exhibits 20th-century fine art, as well as Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. It opened in 1979 on the banks of Hillsborough River. Since its inception, museum planners knew that the Tampa Museum of Art's original building was too small for its collection. Proposals for expansion or relocation were the subject of discussion and controversy for years. Several different plans were proposed either by the city of Tampa or the museum board, including: in 2001, architect Rafael Vinoly designed a dramatic $76 million building which would have included a huge metal canopy overhanging nearby city streets. The project proved too costly and perhaps unsafe in a hurricane. From 2003 to 2005, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio proposed that the museum be relocated to one of several abandoned or underutilized buildings downtown, including an old federal courthouse and a small office tower. However, the museum board was unenthusiastic about the choices. As it turned out, converting the courthouse into usable museum space proved too expensive and disagreement over the appraised price of the office tower scrapped those plans as well. Future site of new Tampa Museum of Art in May, 2008. Museum is pictured in center of sign. (The University of Tampa is visible across the river.) In 2006, the museum board and the city of Tampa agreed to use public and private funds to construct a $33 million, 66,000-square-foot (6,100 m2) new museum in redesigned Curtis Hixon Park as part of Mayor Iorio's Riverwalk project along the Hillsborough River. The building (by architect Stanley Saitowitz) is designed to look like "a metal box sitting on a glass pedestal" and makes use of aluminum, glass, and fiber optic color-changing lights in the exterior walls to "make the building itself a work of art". New homes for the Tampa History Center and Tampa Children's Museum will also be built nearby. The former museum building had to be torn down to make way for the current one. In the interim, the Tampa Museum of Art was temporarily moved to the historic Centro Espanol building in West Tampa, which had been vacant for several years. Groundbreaking for the project took place on April 18, 2008, and the grand opening of the new Tampa Museum of Art took place on February 6, 2010.

Home to the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning and the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League (AFL). The St. Pete Times Forum is an arena in Tampa, Florida, that has been used for ice hockey, basketball, and arena football games, as well as concerts. It is home to the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League and the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League. The venue, located in Downtown Tampa's Channelside District was a secondary location chosen after the failure of Tampa Coliseum Inc. to secure funding to construct an arena on Tampa Sports Authority land near Tampa Stadium. It opened in 1996 as the Ice Palace. Its first event was a performance by the Royal Hanneford Circus. The first hockey game was the Lightning hosting the New York Rangers, which the Lightning won by a score of 5–2. The arena was built as a new home for the Lightning after the club outgrew the older, smaller Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Prior to the opening of the Ice Palace, the Lightning moved to the Florida Suncoast Dome, which was nicknamed the "Thunderdome," in St. Petersburg, Florida, joining the Tampa Bay Storm, in 1994. Upon the completion of the Ice Palace, both the Lightning and the Storm, moved in. The Thunderdome, now named Tropicana Field, is currently home to Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays. Control of the venue has changed hands three times since the building's opening in 1996. The lease agreement ties the arena to the ownership of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Naming rights to the Ice Palace were sold to the St. Petersburg Times, a daily newspaper which circulates throughout the Tampa Bay Area. Other entertainment events occasionally held in the Forum include concerts, NBA exhibition games, USF Basketball and NCAA Tournament games, tennis, professional wrestling, boxing, figure skating, and rodeos (as well as stand-alone bull riding events; the Forum has hosted an event by the PBR's premier tour, the Bud Light Cup (renamed Built Ford Tough Series in 2003), annually since 1998.)

Known as Tampa’s Latin Quarter for over a century, Ybor City is one of only two National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida. Red brick buildings, wrought iron balconies and narrow brick streets give it an old-world charm that is a refreshing change of pace from the beach and the mall. Ybor City (pronounced /'ibr/) (EE-borh) is a historic neighborhood in Tampa, Florida located just northeast of downtown. It was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Spain, Cuba, and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City's cigar factories would roll millions of cigars annually. The neighborhood had features unique among contemporary immigrant communities in the southern United States, most notably its multi-ethnic and multi-racial population and their many mutual aid societies. A slow exodus out of the area that began during the Great Depression accelerated after World War II, leading to a period of abandonment and decay. After decades of neglect, a portion of the original neighborhood has redeveloped into a popular night club and entertainment district. One of the five campuses of Hillsborough Community College is located there as well, HCC Ybor. The neighborhood has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District, and several structures in the area are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, 7th Avenue, the main commercial thoroughfare in Ybor City, was recognized as one of the “10 Great Streets in America” by the American Planning Association. In 2010 Columbia Restaurant was named a "Top 50 All-American icon" by Nation's Restaurant News magazine.

Things To Do in Tampa: Steinbrenner Field - NY Yankees Spring Training #20 of 30 Things To Do in Tampa
Steinbrenner Field - NY Yankees Spring Training
Tampa
~3.75 miles from Tampa city center
Hotels Close to Steinbrenner Field - NY Yankees Spring Training
Legends Field is the largest ballpark to host Spring Training in Florida and has the least intimate feel, but that has a lot more to do with its relatively bland design and choice of location than its 10,386-seat capacity. Legends Field was built amidst the hustle and bustle of Tampa’s busy Dale Mabry Highway. Its neighbor on the other side of the street is Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Spring Training fans are directed to the NFL stadium for parking, which is a pricey $10 in one of Raymond James’ grass lots. A pedestrian bridge above Dale Mabry connects fans from the parking lot to Legends Field, where a walkway outside of the ballpark in right field takes fans to the main entrance behind home plate, where a nicely manicured mini-version of Monument Park resides. The ballpark’s spartan design features one large seating bowl that extends symmetrically into the outfield on both sides. A concourse slices through this single deck, splitting it into two sections. The large two-level structure behind home plate houses the ample press box and the ballpark’s dozen luxury suites. Although it was built fairly recently (1996), Legends Field lacks some of the popular favorites now found in the modern ballpark, such as berm seating and a concourse open to the playing field. And because of the Yankees’ popularity, the large crowds that regularly fill the ballpark in March have lengthy waits to use the small number of bathrooms. The ballpark does have some very nice touches that Yankees fans will be sure to appreciate. The white façade that graces the roof and encircles the stadium is reminiscent of Yankee Stadium’s signature feature, while the playing field dimensions are identical to those at Yankee Stadium. The ivy-covered wall in each team’s bullpen is classy and the distinctive open panel roof design has become the signature hallmark of the Yankees’ spring home. On each side of the ballpark, there are a series of seven open panels between the roof’s façade and the seating bowl. Each panel contains one large letter that spells out the name “Yankees.” The design is atheistically pleasing and gives Legends Field an open feel. As a spring training facility, Legends Field is probably the least fan-friendly of the 17 ballparks to host Grapefruit League games. Player accessibility is very limited, and during the game the Yankees station ushers in optic yellow outfits on the concourse between the two seating sections. If you have a seat in one of the 200 sections they won’t let you into the 100 sections. They also shoo fans away from the bullpen area. That’s not the norm for Spring Training, as the staff at other ballparks allows fans more leeway during the laidback exhibition games. And that’s a big part of the problem with seeing a game at Legends Field. The atmosphere here isn’t as fun as it should be. Sure, the video board (one of the only in the Grapefruit League) shows people dancing to Cotton Eye Joe in the 8th inning, just like at Yankee Stadium, but the overall vibe gives the place a business-like feel that’s contradictorily to the easy going nature usually associated with Spring Training games. If you’re a diehard Yankees fan that won’t matter too much, but the experience in Tampa is different than elsewhere. It also costs more, as ticket prices are barely hovering around affordability: the cheapest seat is $17. The games usually sell out and the fans do stay around here a little while longer than at many other ballparks, where they often begin to hit the exits circa the 6th inning. What the ballpark lacks in fan accessibility is often made up for in starting game time convenience. The Yankees play about half of their spring schedule at night (7:15), which makes the games easier to attend for the average fan. Most Spring Training venues host only one or two night games each March, and a few don’t have any night games at all. Legends Field easily hosts more night games than any other ballpark in the Grapefruit League. Although the quaintness of Spring Training is limited at Legends Field, there are some exceptions. During my most recent game here I was able to watch (from the concourse) A-Rod go through a number of drills with a trainer on a practice field after he left the game. Nonetheless, the lines between Spring Training’s intimate appeal and fan friendliness have been blurred at Legends Field, which is too much an extension of the big league, big business mantra the Yankees march to. The end result is that Tampa offers up a more professional experience than it should, considering the historical appeal of Spring Training. Under the rule of George Steinbrenner the Yankees have always been a button-down organization, and that’s the problem with the ballpark The Boss had built in his hometown of Tampa. Legends Field, located on a busy highway in a big city, isn’t your normal Spring Training facility, but the New York Yankees aren’t your typical baseball organization. The reality is the stadium fits the team, for better or worse.

The four main exhibits, Activate, Investigate, Kids Create, and Fields to Meals are all found at Kids in Charge!. The Kids in Charge! exhibit was headed by an advisory board consisting of 26 children. The Board included children between the ages of 10 and 17. The kids provided feedback and the innovative ideas for the exhibit. Notable parts include the bed of nails and the tug of war exhibit. In the bed of nails, people are able to lie on the bed unharmed because the weight of the individual is evenly distributed over the nails. The tug-of-war attraction is a game of pulling of rope to one side, but the device that the rope is connected to acts as a lever, which causes one side to always be the winning side. Sponsors continually contribute towards the various exhibits at MOSI. The cost of the Kids in Charge! exhibit was about three million dollars.
