The Erie Canal Museum used to be just a Weighlock building among many along the Erie Canal. In 1956 the Weighlock building almost became history instead of housing history. Governor Harriman had overturned voting and decided to give the land where the Weighlock building was located to the Department of Public Works and the DPW was going to knock it down to run I-81 right through it. The people of Syracuse, especially the people of the Junior League, went on a heavy letter writing campaign and saved the Weighlock building. Their efforts saved what we can now visit and know as The Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, New York.
When you visit The Erie Canal Museum there are several exhibits that you should certainly check out. The Erie Canal Museum exhibits of interest are the Frank B. Thompson Line Boat where you can see the replica of an Erie Canal boat, the Penny Postcard Arcade, Weighmaster's Office, Uniquely Syracuse Room, mid 1800's replica Tavern (a real one can be seen at the Adams Basin Inn), the general store display, pottery of the time display and stonecutters shed.
You can visit The Erie Canal Museum with your friends or family alone or through a guided tour. Tours start at 10:00am and run through 3:00pm Monday through Friday. Tours at The Erie Canal Museum can accommodate up to 20 people with a charge of $3.00 per person.

The United States Armed Forces are the overall unified military forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
The United States has a strong tradition of civilian control of the military. While the President is the overall head of the military, the United States Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, is the principal organ by which military policy is carried out. The Coast Guard may be transferred to the Department of the Navy by the President or Congress during a time of war. All five armed services are among the seven uniformed services of the United States; the others are the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps.
From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of the United States. A sense of national unity and identity was forged out of the victorious Barbary Wars, as well as the War of 1812. Even so, the Founders were suspicious of a permanent military force and not until the outbreak of World War II did a large standing army become officially established.
The National Security Act of 1947, adopted following World War II and during the onset of the Cold War, created the modern U.S. military framework; the Act merged previously Cabinet-level Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the National Military Establishment (renamed the Department of Defense in 1949), headed by the Secretary of Defense; and created the Department of the Air Force and National Security Council.
The U.S. military is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. It draws its manpower from a large pool of volunteers; although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it has not been used since 1972. As of 2010, the United States spends about $692 billion annually to fund its military forces, constituting approximately 43 percent of world military expenditures. The U.S. armed forces as a whole possess large quantities of advanced and powerful equipment, which gives them significant capabilities in both defense and power projection.

The Everson Museum of Art, in Downtown Syracuse, New York, is a major Central New York museum focusing on American art.
The museum was founded in 1897 by art historian George Fisk Comfort (who also helped found the Metropolitan Museum of Art); at that time, it was called the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts. In 1911, it announced that it would seek to collect only American art.
Over time the museum occupied several different buildings, including the Onondaga Savings Bank and the Syracuse Public Library, but it outgrew each facility.
In 1941, Helen Everson made a gift to the city of Syracuse for the purpose of erecting an art museum. A groundbreaking took place in 1965, and in 1968 the new Everson Museum of Art opened. The new building was designed by internationally-acclaimed architect I. M. Pei, and is regarded as a work of art in its own right.
The Everson Museum of Art is also a famous location for skateboarders. Although illegal, on June 21, better known as National Go Skateboarding Day, skateboarders are allowed to skate at the museum. Central New York skateboarders often have signs that say "FREE eVe" meaning free the Everson Museum of Art.

Hoffman, President of the National Brewing Company as a home for his family, and used in later years as a V.F.W. post, a Union Hall, and a church, this magical "castle" has finally found its home as a unique cultural resource - Open Hand Theater's International Mask and Puppet Museum. From its castle in the midst of the culturally diverse and exciting NorthSide neighborhood, Open Hand Theater provides a doorway into a whole world of mask, puppetry, music, and dance traditions and the borderless world of the human imagination.
Open Hand Theater was born out of Seedling Theater of Oneonta New York. Open Hand Theater began its journey in 1980. Its first steps were from a small loft studio space in an abandoned warehouse area later to be known as the revitalized Armory Square. The theater moved to Plymouth Congregational Church in 1985 and became the first of a series of collaborations in the Syracuse community and beyond that have helped set it on its current path. From its earliest days, Open Hand Theater has had a strong commitment to community involvement, education and social concerns.
Open Hand Theater employs masks and puppets together with live actors and music to produce theatrical pieces for children and adult audiences, including performances in schools, parks, community centers, churches and professional theaters as well as its "Castle" home. The United States Department of Defense (USDOD, DOD or DoD, initially briefly referred to as the National Military Establishment or NME) is the U.S. federal department charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. The Department of Defense is an evolution of the Department of War. The organization and functions of the DoD are set forth in Title 10 of the United States Code.
The DoD is the major tenant of The Pentagon building near Washington, D.C., and has three major components – the Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Among the many DoD agencies are the Missile Defense Agency, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and the National Security Agency (NSA). The department also operates several joint service schools, including the National War College.
During 1945, specific plans for the proposed DoD were put forth by the Army, the Navy, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In a special message to Congress on 19 December 1945, President Harry Truman proposed creation of a unified department of state defense. A proposal went to Congress in April 1946, but was held up by the Naval Affairs Committee hearings in July 1946, which raised objections to the concentration of power in a single department. Truman eventually sent new legislation to Congress in February 1947, where it was debated and amended for several months.
DoD was created in 1947 as a national military establishment with a single secretary as its head to preside over the former Department of War (founded in 1789) and Department of the Navy (founded in 1798; formerly the Board of Admiralty, founded in 1780). The Department of the Air Force was also created as a new service (previously under the War Department as the Army Air Forces). DoD was created in order to reduce interservice rivalry, which was believed to have reduced military effectiveness during World War II.
On July 26, 1947, Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947, which set up the "National Military Establishment" to begin operations on September 18, 1947, the day after the Senate confirmed James V. Forrestal as the first Secretary of Defense. The Establishment had the unfortunate abbreviation "NME" (with a pronunciation virtually identical to "enemy"), and was renamed the "Department of Defense" (also described in the Act under "Title II - The Department of Defense", and later abbreviated as "DoD") on August 10, 1949.
The name-shift from "Department of War" to "Department of Defense" has been seen as an acceptance of Carl von Clausewitz's second maxim from his famous work On War. Clausewitz states: "The aggressor always pretends to be peace-loving because he would like to achieve his conquests without bloodshed . . . Therefore, aggression must be presented as a defensive reaction by the aggressor nation." Hugh Nibley comments: "Nobody ever attacks. You're always just on the defensive. After World War I, the German War Office, Kriegsamt, changed its name to Wehrmacht, "defense power." We changed our War Office to the Department of Defense. We're just defensive now, that's all. Both sides must take the defensive position, whether they are aggressors or not."
In addition, the Secretary of Defense was given greater authority over three of the branches of the military (Army, Navy, and Air Force). Prior to the creation of the National Military Establishment / Department of Defense, the Armed Forces of the U.S. were separated into different cabinet-level departments without much central authority. The Marine Corps remained as a separate service under the Department of the Navy, and the Coast Guard is under Department of Homeland Security, ready to be shifted to the Navy Department during time of declared war (as it was in both world wars).

On November 19, 2008, Le Moyne announced that it had received a gift of $50 million from the estate of Robert and Catherine McDevitt, longtime friends of the college who lived in Binghamton, NY. The legacy was designated for the support of the study of physics, computer science, information systems and religious philosophy. Neither of the McDevitts attended Le Moyne. Mr. McDevitt's mother was Mary Graiff McDevitt, secretary for A. Ward Ford, a board member of Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation. That company changed its name to IBM in 1924. McDevitt, S.J., helped establish Le Moyne's physics department when the college was founded.

Onondaga Lake is northwest of the city of Syracuse, New York and south of Lake Ontario. Water outflows from the lake to Lake Ontario through the Oswego River. The lake is five miles (8 km) long and a mile (1.5 km) wide. It has an area of 4.6 square miles (11.9 square kilometers) and has a maximum depth of 63 feet (19 m). Although it is near the Finger Lakes region, it is not traditionally counted as one of the Finger Lakes.
Around 1450 or possibly earlier, Onondaga Lake was the site of the founding of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. According to legend, at this spot the warlike Onondaga chief Tadodaho was persuaded by Hiawatha and Deganawidah (the Peacemaker) to accept the Great Law of Peace. Historically, the lake and the surrounding area was a site of salt springs and later salt mining. The salt was distributed throughout the north-east via the Erie Canal; Irish immigrants working in this industry created the local dish of salt potatoes.
Today, Onondaga Lake is a severely polluted lake. Onondaga Lake has been described as one of the most polluted lakes in the United States,[1] primarily due to industrial dumping and sewage contamination. Fishing for human consumption was banned in 1970 because of contamination from some 82 tons of mercury dumped into the lake over decades by the former Allied Chemical factory complex in Solvay. The lake was opened to allow catch and release fishing in 1986 with The New York State Dept. of Health has issuing health advisories which warn against consumption of certain fish (e.g. walleye, bass) due to mercury and PCB contamination. Other species are limited to one meal per month. Swimming was banned in 1940 due to bacteria and water clarity problems. Bacteria levels occasionally exceed state standards due to sewage discharges. The lake has high levels of mercury, salt, phosphorus, and ammonia due to discharge from a previous local chemical company, Solvay Process. The EPA has declared it a hazardous waste site. Recently, an effort has been made to clean up the water in the lake. The lake is also the subject of a land rights action filed in 2005 by the Onondaga Nation. It offers various trails around itself, and a public park.
The lake is surrounded by the city of Syracuse and the suburban area of Solvay, a center of industry in the Syracuse area. Many of the companies in the areas of Solvay and Syracuse are held to blame for the lake's high concentrations of hazardous chemicals. Honeywell International (formerly AlliedSignal, which acquired Honeywell and took its name) is being held responsible for the clean up of the lake for their mass depositing of mercury and salt over the years. From a large municipal discharge the lake in the summer is generally covered in many areas with algae that creates a vile odor that can be smelled for miles. Onondaga County is spending $500 million on a 15-year project to stop polluting the lake with sewage by 2012. The county is under a federal court order to make the lake safe for swimming and fishing and comply with the federal Clean Water Act.
