Naval Station Great Lakes is the United States Navy's Headquarters Command for training, located in the city of North Chicago, Illinois, in Lake County. Important tenant commands include the Recruit Training Center, Training Support Center and Naval Recruiting District Chicago. Naval Station Great Lakes is the largest military installation in Illinois and the largest training center in the Navy. The base has 1,153 buildings situated on 1,628 acres (6.59 km2) and has 50 miles (80 km) of roadway to provide access to the base's facilities. Within the naval service, it has several different nicknames, including "The Quarterdeck of the Navy," or the more derogatory "Great Mistakes," the latter being used by disgruntled sailors who wish for nothing more than civilian life.
The original 39 buildings built between 1903 and 1927 were designed by Jarvis Hunt.
The Great Lakes Naval Training Center won the 1919 Rose Bowl football game against Mare Island.
The base is completely self sufficient from the civilian communities surrounding it, with its own fire department, police department, brig (jail), and maintenance departments.
One of the landmarks of the area is the large Central Administration Building. Completed in 1911, the building is made of red brick, and has a tower that stands 300 feet over the third floor of the building, dwarfing all other buildings on the base, with the exception of the Naval Hospital, located several yards to the right of the Administration Building. The large parade ground in front of the administration building is named Ross Field, and is usually the place where Pass In Review ceremonies are held every Friday during the summer months.

Located in a new 50,000 sq. ft. lakefront facility
overlooking Lake Michigan, the Kenosha Public
Museum is the centerpiece of Kenosha's beautiful
HarborPark development project. This striking new
building is an architectural metaphor of the glacier
that sliced through the region more than 15,000
years ago to form the landscape and geology that
we know today as southeastern Wisconsin. A
towering 60 ft. atrium lobby, symbolic of that glacier,
and a massive exposed wall of fieldstone create a
dramatic beginning to the museum visit.

The mission of the Chicago Botanic Garden is to promote the enjoyment, understanding, and conservation of plants and the natural world.
The Garden continues to strive to meet the lofty goals set more than a century ago. The Chicago Botanic Garden, with its world-renowned plant collections and displays, is one of the country's most visited public gardens and a preeminent center for learning and scientific research.
The 385-acre Garden features 24 display gardens and three native habitats, uniquely situated on nine islands surrounded by lakes.
The Chicago Horticultural Society was founded in 1890. At its heart was the understanding that the city of Chicago was incorporated with the Latin words Urbs in Horto, meaning "city in a garden." The Society hosted nationally recognized flower and horticultural shows and supported Chicago's lakeshore improvements and park system.
After a period of inactivity, the Chicago Horticultural society was restarted in 1943. In 1963, the Chicago Horticultural Society was granted 300 acres of forest on the outskirts of the city, and the Chicago Botanic Garden established roots. With the groundbreaking for the Garden in 1965 and its opening in 1972, the Society created a permanent site on which to carry out its mission. The mission encompasses three important components: collections, education, and research.
From its founding, the Garden has hired leading architects, beginning with the master plan by John O. Simonds and Geoffrey Rausch. Edward Larabee Barnes designed the Education Center as the Garden's first building in 1977. The Malott Japanese Garden, Sansho-En, was completed in 1982. Throughout its existence, the Chicago Botanic Garden has developed gardens and educational facilities with a meticulous eye toward its original mission.

Forest Glen (Neighborhood)
Chicago IL
~26.93 miles from Gurnee city center
Hotels Close to Forest Glen
Forest Glen is one of the 77 community areas of Chicago, Illinois, located in the city's Northwest Side.
Edgebrook
Edgebrook borders the neighborhood of Sauganash. Edgebrook was once part of the Sauganash land tract and was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1889. To the north of Edgebrook lie Wildwood and then North Edgebrook. Frequently the three communities together are referred to as "Edgebrook."
"Edgebrook" is roughly bordered by I-94 (Edens Expressway) and the city limits to the east, the forest preserve and Niles to the West, The North Branch of the Chicago River to the South, and the Chicago city limits to the north.
Edgebrook is home to the Billy Caldwell Golf Course and the Edgebrook Golf Course, both operated by the Cook County Forest Preserves.
Sauganash
Sauganash was once part of the Sauganash land tract and was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1889. This neighborhood is named after Sauganash, a local Potawotomi leader in the 19th century. The "Old Treaty Elm" was located here. The neighborhood is home to two churches: Sauganash Community Church, a non-denominational Protestant church, and Queen of All Saints, a Roman Catholic Basilica. The Sauganash neighborhood, a residential area, has many distinctive, individualistic homes. It also had large tracts of prairie land until the mid 1950s.
The Sauganash neighborhood is bordered by Devon to the North, Bryn Mawr to the South, and Cicero to the West. The eastern boundary was an unused railroad spur. Recently, the City of Chicago converted the railroad spur into a bicycle trail.
Forest Glen
A community of about 550 residences on the Northwest side of the city of Chicago is often referred to as "Chicago's Finest Community". It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Chicago. First inhabited by Captain William Hazelton of the 1st cavalry Division, he built the Glen's first barn at what is now Lawler and Foster.
The Forest Glen neighborhood is bordered by the Chicago River to the North, Foster Ave to the South, Cicero Ave to the East and Metra Milwaukee District North line to the West.
Wildwood
Wildwood is an exclusive enclave surrounded by Edgebrook. The community is triangular in shape and is bordered by Lehigh Avenue, Caldwell Avenue (Route 14), Tonty Avenue, and Lightfoot Avenue. The Edgebrook Metra Station faces Wildwood at the intersection of Devon, Lehigh, and Caldwell.
The most notable features of Wildwood are its rustic surroundings, including its unique curb-less streets, and massive trees towering above the homes. A satellite view of Wildwood compared to other nearby Chicago communities will reveal the difference in the volume of trees. Wildwood provides the entrance to Bunker Hill Forest Preserve and the North Branch Bicycle Trail (ending at the Botanical Gardens in Highland Park, Illinois). The community of Wildwood contains very few businesses or rental options as it is primarily a community of single family homes.
Wildwood Park (6950 N. Hiawatha Ave), which is actually located in North Edgebrook (near the border with Wildwood), contains one senior and two junior baseball fields, a softball field, one football field, four basketball standards, two tennis courts, a horseshoe pit, one playground, and a spray pool. Wildwood Park is also known for its Junior Bears football team, the Wildwood Seminoles. Youth in 6th, 7th and 8th grade can participate in Junior Bears or the cheerleading program. Wildwood Park is very active during the summer months with multiple sports activities and kids play happening simultaneously. Wildwood Community is host to a large Independence Day celebration with a parade through the streets and party in Wildwood Park where the parade ends.
Long-time park director and Wildwood Packers football coach Bob Cole turned the park fieldhouse into a "wall of fame" for many of the children who have grown up in the neighborhood park, including the legendary Weber family. Photos and news clippings cover the walls and ceilings, memorializing the community members that have made the park what it is over the years. The gymnasium is shared with Wildwood School, where basketball, floor hockey and recreational tumbling programs take place. Ice hockey star, Chris Bergstrom dominated the tile-floored gymnasium during after school floor hockey leagues. Jerseys were not available to players, rather shirts vs. skins was commonplace.

Chicago IL
~28.04 miles from Gurnee city center
Hotels Close to Jefferson Park
Jefferson Park is one of Chicago's 77 well-defined community areas as well as a neighborhood located on the city's Northwest Side. The territorial discrepancy between the two stems from the fact that the neighborhood of Jefferson Park occupies a larger swath of territory than the community area by including with in it land of adjacent community areas.
Jefferson Park is bordered by the community areas of Norwood Park to the northwest, Forest Glen to the northeast, Portage Park and the suburb of Harwood Heights to the south. Although the official community area map draws the boundary between Jefferson Park and Portage Park at Lawrence, many residents consider the boundary between the two neighborhoods to be at Montrose to the south, reflected in most 'Chicago Neighborhood Maps'.
