Vernon Hills has always enjoyed a status as a quiet slice of land exclusive to a small population. It was incorporated in 1958 and rose to a population of 9,827 by 1980. The village has undergone steady growth ever since, but there's still plenty of space to stretch your legs and take life at a slower pace. One of the local historic attractions is the Village Hills Park District. Here you can see Village Hall, which replaced the village's Tally Ho Country Club as the home of public divisions and organizations such as Vernon Hills' community development department.
If you visit Vernon Hills Park District today, you can see some of these public buildings and enjoy community center resources and attractions such as the Delores Sullivan Community Center and Aquatic Complex and the Vernon Hills Golf Course. Many of the other things to do in the area are either outdoor attractions (such as a walk through Potawatomi Woods) or shopping centers (such as Hawthorn Mall) and boutique stores. This makes Vernon Hills hotels an excellent choice if your main priority is rest and relaxation.
When is the best time to visit Vernon Hills, Illinois?
With so much to see and do outdoors, it's often best for visitors to schedule their visits in the warmest months. The lows in December through February will creep down into the negatives, and the averages won't breach the 30s until March.
This cold weather means you'll be resigned to mostly indoor activities, unless you plan for days out sledding or cross-country skiing in Half Day Forest Preserve or Heller Nature Center (both of which are minutes from downtown Vernon Hills). Even then, the weather will likely be too cold to truly appreciate a full day of outdoor activities. For this reason, most travelers are happy to plan their trips for the warmer months of spring and summer.
Things start heating up in April, with averages in the 50s that climb on into the 70s in June, July, and August. Indeed, these are the hottest months, with highs occasionally breaking 100 degrees Fahrenheit. To relax in weather that's warm enough for swimming or hiking but not quite so unbearable, visit in late May, early June, or late August. This will also help you avoid the heavier summer crowds that flock to the area for a chance to dip their toes in Lake Michigan or spend a day out sailing on the water. Note that August is the rainiest month, with precipitation averaging 3.6 inches.
