Livingstone College

~0.37 miles from Salisbury city center
Hotels Close to Livingstone College
Livingstone College is a private, historically black, four-year college in Salisbury, North Carolina. It is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Livingstone College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Social Work degrees.
Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary were originally founded as Zion Wesley Institute by a group of A.M.E. Zion ministers for the purpose of training ministers in the Cabarrus County town of Concord, North Carolina in 1879. After three brief sessions, directed by principals Bishop C.R. Harris and Professor A.S. Richardson, the Institute ultimately closed in Concord. In 1881, Dr. Joseph Charles Price, Lincoln University, PA class of 1879, and Bishop J.W. Hood changed their roles as delegates to the Ecumenical Conference and became fund-raisers with the mission to re-establish Zion Wesley Institute. The Rowan County town of Salisbury, just 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Concord, gave the Trustees a generous donation of $1,000 and an invitation to relocate the school to Salisbury. They accepted both gifts, and the college re-opened in Salisbury in 1882 with Dr. Price as President. The new site was J.M. Gray’s farm called Delta Grove, which consisted of one building and 40 acres (160,000 m2) of land. In 1887, by an act of the legislature, the name Zion Wesley Institute was changed to Livingstone College in honor of David Livingstone, the great Christian missionary, philanthropist, and explorer. Since its inception, the College has had two principals and seventeen presidents, including six interim presidents. Among its possessions, the institution owns 272 acres (1.10 km2) of land and the physical plant that currently consists of twenty-one brick buildings, seven of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places http://www.livingstone.edu

Lowes Motor Speedway
Concord NC
~22.72 miles from Salisbury city center
Hotels Close to Lowes Motor Speedway
Charlotte Motor Speedway (formerly Lowe's Motor Speedway) is a speedway in Concord, North Carolina, north of Charlotte. It features a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) long quad-oval track that seats 140,000 people, with room for 50,000 more spectators in the infield. Constructed in 1959, it was the first speedway to host nighttime superspeedway racing (in 1992) in the "modern era," the first being the now defunct Raleigh Speedway in 1958, and to offer year-round residences (in 1984) with 52 condominiums available over turn one. It is owned by Speedway Motorsports, which has its corporate headquarters on the same property. The speedway is considered the home base of NASCAR, with 90% of NASCAR teams being based within 50 miles (80 km).
In February 1999, Lowe's bought the naming rights to the speedway, making it the first race track in the country with a corporate sponsor. Lowe's chose not to renew its naming rights after the 2009 NASCAR season. The track reverted to its original name, Charlotte Motor Speedway, in 2010.
Along with the main oval, the speedway also has a 2.25-mile (3.62 km) road course in the infield, a 0.6-mile (0.97 km) kart course in the infield, a quarter-mile oval using part of the front stretch and pit road, and an 0.2-mile (0.32 km) oval outside turn three. Also, across U.S. Highway 29 from the speedway, is a 0.4-mile (0.64 km) dirt track that opened in May 2000. The 0.25-mile (0.40 km) oval located between the frontstretch and pit road was constructed in 1991 for a legends race which was part of the Winston weekend. It was designed after Bowman-Gray Stadium. Also on speedway ground is a four lane dragstrip named Zmax Dragway which opened in September of 2008.
In 2005, the surface of the circuit had started to wear from its last paving in mid-1994, resulting in the track's treatment in a diamond-grinding process to smooth out bumps. This process, known as levigation, caused major tire problems during both NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series (now Sprint Cup Series) events there, with a record 22 cautions at the showcase Coca-Cola 600, which is considered one of the top five annual NASCAR races. It was the first Sprint Cup Series event to go more than five hours (excluding red flags) in 25 years. Speed increases were also a result of the levigation. After the problem with the tires, the speedway was repaved in 2006. Speedway President H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler retired following the Coca-Cola 600 on May 25, 2008 and was replaced by Marcus Smith.

Big Meadow creek flows through our property into Rocky River, which is how our name was born. The butterfly on our label is representative of a new life, a new beginning. The vine is an indication of our dreams unfolding, and the grapes represent our future.

#20 of 20 Things To Do in Salisbury
Hanes Mall
Winston - Salem NC
~29.21 miles from Salisbury city center
Hotels Close to Hanes Mall
Hanes Mall was North Carolina's largest enclosed shopping mall until 2004. (SouthPark Mall in Charlotte is the largest mall, including outdoor retail area), with nearly 1.5 million square feet (139,000 m²) of retail space. The mall is located just off I-40 on Silas Creek Parkway between Stratford Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The original mall, the north wing, was opened in 1975 with Belk, J.C. Penney and Sears. In 1990, a new wing was built, expanding the mall southward to include Ivey's (this store was signed as Ivey's but, due to an acquisition by the parent company, opened as Dillard's), Thalhimers (converted to Hecht's in 1992, and to Macy's in 2006) and a new food court.
Because of this design, one must go through J.C. Penney to cross from one wing to the other. In addition, the mall is built into the side of the hill; patrons enter through the first floor on the east side of the mall, but must enter on the second floor on the west side. Hanes Mall is two stories throughout, with the exception of Belk and Macy's, which each have an additional floor.
The road that loops the mall's parking lot is known as Hanes Mall Circle and is the address for many outlying businesses including McDonald's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, O'Charley's, and Olive Garden. There are five roadway entrances into the mall parking lot, one off of Silas Creek Parkway, two off of Hanes Mall Boulevard, and two off of Stratford Road. Hanes Mall also had a four-screen General Cinema movie theater until October 10, 2000; it stood at the spot that is now home to Golden Corral. The Theater Closed due to the competing Wynnsong 12 operated by Carmike Theaters.
A large, working carousel is located on the lower level. The mall is currently owned and operated by CBL & Associates Properties, Inc.
