Cannon Manufacturing was the new textile mill, and it started production in 1908, becoming the world's largest producer of towels and sheets by 1914. Most of the facilities you'll find in Kannapolis, including a movie theater, a YMCA, and more than 1,000 homes, were constructed for mill employees.
Residents voted to incorporate Kannapolis in 1984. Today, Kannapolis is home to an economic and scientific revitalization project known as the North Carolina Research Campus. It's becoming a hub for collaborative science, where innovation and discovery in fields such as agriculture, disease prevention, and nutrition take place.
