Monroe was founded in 1843 when the first Board of Commissioners in the county selected an area as the county seat. The name comes from the fifth president of the U.S., James Monroe. The city was the topic of conversation throughout much of the Civil Rights Movement due to federal cases and other issues that took place in the area. The African American community and NAACP members in Monroe provided a base for Freedom Riders in 1961, as they worked to integrate interstate bus travel in the U.S. This culturally diverse area is on the rise, along with the surrounding cities in the metro area.
