My girlfriend and I had booked a room in the Diamond Head wing of the hotel as it was the most affordable for us and still close to Waikiki Beach. When we arrived on 15 May we checked in and went straight to our room so we could get settled in and make our way out for supper. When we returned my girlfriend noticed that there were small ants crawling all over the kitchenette area. When we looked closer we noticed that the ants were also in the bathroom and in a few places around the bed. We went to the front desk and explained the situation to the clerk. He offered us another room in the main tower for the night and said they would spray the room in the morning so we could move back in for the next night of our visit. The next morning we talked to the manager on duty and she was aware of the situation. She explained that the staff could spray to get rid of the ants and would move our belongings back in afterward. We headed out for the day and returned shortly before supper. At first everything seemed to be ok and we didn't notice any ants. However after we had gone out for supper and returned we once again noticed that there were ants in the room as with the previous night. We once again went to the front desk where the manager on duty assigned us to a different room in the same wing. In both cases the rooms we were moved to were upgrades from our original room.
However the upgraded rooms do not take away from the fact that we should not have had to move in the first place. For the price I paid for the room I would expect that something like an ant infestation would have been handled before someone moved into the room. I have had less problems while staying at an Econolodge. It was also frustrating in that we were there for 2 nights and were not in the same room either night or in the room that I had booked either night. I would have expected to be moved after the first night to an equivalent room for the duration of our stay.
With the exception of the person on duty at the desk the first night, who made us feel like it was our fault, all other staff we dealt with at the hotel were very pleasant and eager to help. All in all though our stay at this hotel was not a pleasant experience. While I cannot comment on rooms in the main tower I would avoid the Diamond Head wing and am not likely to stay here again or recommend this hotel to any of my friends. « less

I first stayed here during the 1960's and continued with yearly visits into the early 70's but then switched to the Kahala, and most recently, the Halekulani. The Kaimana experience is more low key and reminiscent of Hawaii of yesteryear; but mind you, choose your room carefully as some rooms are very, very small. I had a lovely, renovated Ocean Deluxe room on the seventh floor (#721) with views of the ocean and Waikiki with a wrap-around porch with views of Diamondhead. A comparable room at the Halekulani would have been priced at more than double the nightly rate. Orignally they were going to put me on the 4th floor, but when I reminded them I had called the week prior to request a higher floor, Mai at the front desk, graciously jumped in and granted my request.
The beach in front of the hotel is perfect (I brought my own towel and beach chair) with a lifeguard, and Waikiki is an easy 10 minute walk along the water.
The poi pancakes at the Hau Tree Lanai are the best breakfast treat - better than the French toast or the Eggs Benedict. For dinner, try the Ahi Salad Nicoise - delicious and well priced. For good, less expensive food, take a short walk past the Aquarium to the Barefoot Beach Cafe - try the garlic shrimp plate (just like you find on the shrimp trucks around the island) for lunch.
Dined at Michel's for memories - dinner was nice, wonderful setting, but my best meal was at Alan Wong's. Try the Passion Fruit Mojito - best cocktail ever! The service was vey attentive and the food features local, fresh ingredients. « less

The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel is in a lovely spot, tucked not far from Diamond Head and fronting the beach. It looks like a 1960s-era hotel (and some of the maintenance shows) but its location away from the main strip of Waikiki Beach is a huge plus.
The hotel is about 10 minutes or so level walking from the main strip of Waikiki Beach – a good stroll, a safe neighbourhood, and a short taxi ride if you really cannot walk this. Well worth being away from the racket and noise of the main strip.
The open bar and restaurant area was a pleasant way to get one’s land-legs back after the flight from Australia, even if the maître d was a little bit short. The bellman allegedly helping us with luggage then slammed the door in my wife’s face as we struggled up the stairs in the apartment wing (above the shops). Maybe they had heard that Australians are reputed to be terrible tippers. Other staff were very pleasant, and uniformly helpful
We chose a 1-bedroom apartment, with a TINY kitchenette and no work desk but otherwise spacious. We had our own basic kitchen implements which, together with my skills in microwave cookery, had us self-catering when we weren’t eating out. The room overlooked the adjacent park.
Several maintenance issues with the room – loose power outlets, eccentric microwave oven (only worked if we closed the door a certain way), and TV remotes that were really simply fancy paperweights. But most were addressed when reported (except the microwave – we received lessons on how to close the door).
No noise problems that we experienced, and a lovely spot on top of the beach. Lovely for a dip or for just strolling and watching the sunset.
Now be warned; this is NOT a business hotel, This is reflected in the absence of a business centre and work desk in room, and in (initially) the rather laid-back way they initially treated our complaint regarding the very slow wi fi. A technician did a drive-by assessment and determined the wi fi was working; our problem was that it was not working properly. The hotel finally had the problem assessed properly, and indeed found that the wi fi was indeed not working properly. But by that stage I was 4 days behind in my work.
But if you are after a vacation or a nice stopover to or from mainland USA / Australia, then this is certainly the place to be. « less

This is a really nice small hotel located right across the street from Kapiolani Park and away from all of the tourists of Waikiki. It literally takes seven minutes to walk from the hotel to Waikiki Beach. It is super quiet and has an awesome beach right in front of the hotel. It is also within walking distance to the Aquarium, which is also a nice little feature. We had a room on the seventh floor overlooking the park, with views of the ocean and wonderful Honolulu sunsets and skyline views. It was superb and very relaxing. This hotel is owned by a Japanese company, so they do cater to a TON of Japanese tourists, so we were definitely in the minority here. But they are all very nice and friendly and treat all guests extremely well. I am beginning to have more of an appreciation for the smaller boutique style hotels of the world as they have to compete with very large companies and seem to do all of the little things better than the larger places. This place does everything right and also has a fantastic restaurant on-site, Hau Tree Lanai, which gets super busy because it is probably the closest you will ever come to dining right ON the beach in Honolulu and has wonderful food and great service. It is a little on the pricey side, but everything in Hawaii is expensive, just know that before you go there. The staff here is exceptional and I would DEFINITELY stay here again. The only downside for some people might be that they do not have a swimming pool, but their beach is right out front and it's very calm and excellent for swimming. If you go out further, you will be swimming with turtles. Beautiful place, beautiful people. A+ « less

We stayed here for 3 nights recently. We had booked an Ocean Wakiki Superior, recently renovated, room but, upon arrival, were upgraded to a junior suite on the 7th floor! The suite was on a corner with a view of Diamond Head in one direction and Waikiki beach and the ocean on the other so we could see sunrise and sunset from the lanai. The views were fabulous! The staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The hotel was only a 15 minute walk to central Waikiki, along a path next to the beach and park. We felt as if we had a private beach! We enjoyed a meal on the first floor restaurant under the tree. We'd definitely like to come again! « less

"hank you! I will definitely be recommending your service to others I know. It made the confusing task of booking a hotel block easy as pie! I can't imagine how tedious it would have been to call each of the hotels- and who would want to when they all competed for our business instead? :)" C.T. - San Marcos, CA
"I think this website is wonderful! I was put directly in contact with hotels who offered me great discounts right through the site! I hardly had to look at all, just accept offers! Thanks this service is superb!" T.T. - Saint Helena, CA
