Location really couldn't be better, just meters from the Powell BART station. Older hotel, nicely decorated in a modern style, and had a relatively spacious room. Sleep was great except for a squeak in the morning from the old fashioned radiator, but turn it off and the squeak went. The free drinks on weekday evenings was a nice touch, and the breakfast, though basic, was more than sufficient. Would definitely stay here again. « less

The hotel is excellently located in San Francisco and very close to the BART station that you might actually walk past it as was my case. Once you step out of the station towards Powell street, be sure to look out (up) for the hotel. The lobby of the hotel is not grand, the person at the front desk was neither friendly nor unfriendly, and the process was quick. As I made my way to my room I began to notice the age of this hotel... I got to my room and concluded that while the hotel looks immaculate, there is one thing "immaculate" cannot cure and that is age. The hotel looked old, it sounded old (the elevator and creaking floor boards under the carpet) and it smelled old. I got to my room and as always when I get to a new hotel room, I adjust the air conditioning, but to my dismay there was no air conditioning in this room, not even a split system that typically seats under the window. I was ready to cancel my reservation at this point and loose payment for a day's stay, however getting to the hotel late meant I would loose payment for 2 nights which was as long as I was staying, so decided to suck it up and stay. The location of this hotel really made up for all the disadvantages it possessed, very close to union square, walking distance to China town and if you are so inclined to Fisherman's Wharf. I also walked to pier1 from this location and also to pier 33 where I boarded a boat to Alcatraz island - I love walking! The hotel is also close to the Westfield mall and a lot more shopping and it is more or less in the financial district. Here is the bottom line from my perspective, the hotel served its purpose for me, I think I was lucky. If you have a day or two, you are traveling solo on a limited budget and want to make the best of your time here, this hotel will work for you, but ask for a room that isn't overlooking Powell street. I will not stay here again as long as they do not have air conditioning. The hotel needs some serious interior upgrade, but once that is done, it will probably slide off the affordable range. « less

Its the niggly things that make or break a hotel stay and there was too much too niggle about here. For example, the bath didn't have a plug and despite requesting one, it never arrived. The wi-fi on all my devices (laptop, iphone and ipad) was intermittent and when I went to get coffee in the morning, one day they had "forgot" to put it out and the next "the machine was broken!" My shower had a problem and despite saying a maid would be sent, I ended up having to find one myself (who DID help). And the walls were thin. That or the guest next door was hard of hearing.
The hotel is well sited but when you've had a busy day or are about to prepare for one, the above issues are annoying. « less

Well one good thing about this hotel is the location! Right next to a few of my favorite stores, Forever21 and Sephora. A couple blocks up you can find Union Square and lots of shopping locations there and small restaurants and bars. Right across from the Cable car pickup/drop off location which can either be good or bad. Good for us that we didnt have to walk much and then again creates a lot of traffic. Also it is located near the muni station fast travel and cheap!!
Customer service well the day we checked in the gentleman was not the best. Practically handed our room keys to us with no welcome no information on the hotel, didnt even explain the continental breakfast location or hours. Awful!! Although the following day a different older gentleman was there and he was very helpful with directions and friendly towards us and our 3 year old son.
The hotel is old, looks like it has been painted so many times over old paint. Our room was not the best i wasnt impressed. The bed wasnt comfortable at all, NO AC only an old fan. The room was decent size but the carpet looked like it needed to be changed it was lifting in certain areas not the best lighting in there either even will all lights on.
The restroom was ok you can tell they either had just painted or were too lazy to remove pieces of tape from the walls, the tile was old needed to be changed if you stepped on certain parts you could hear it moving. This was room 224 on the second floor.
I gave it 3 because of the location it was convinient for all of our needs and close to a lot of places. If it werent for that i would have given a 1. Im not sure i would ever stay here again although my husband said he would because of the location. « less
