Green Sustainability
Green Initiatives:
CARBON RESPONSIBLE EVENT
Banyan Tree Mayakoba is the first resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico, to offer event planners the option to hold their events in a carbon responsible manner. By choosing Banyan Tree Mayakoba as the venue for their events, these companies will be playing their part to support the reforestation of areas of Mexico and provide employment to the local indigenous population. This triple bottom line approach is in keeping with the Banyan Tree corporate belief that there is no need to sacrifice the environment in order to deliver a sublime experience. The organizers will receive an event verification certificate provided by Reforestamos Mexico. Each guest receives a wooden artefact crafted by a local workshop based in the Buenavista community, which salvages wood from trees felled by natural causes and crafts them into forms that represent the beauty of Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
MELIPONA BEE
Inaugurated in may 2010, the meliponary “U najil Xunan Cab” seeks to keep the Mayan Tradition of beekeeping alive through the creation of small community enterprises that allow economic development of the local community through environmentally friendly productive activity. Now in the second stage, we are developing with the community honey based products that will allow to get added values to the precious honey. You can also be a part of this project, we can offer you the possibility of organizing a range of activities to suit your needs.
GREENING COMMUNITIES
Launched in 2007, this Banyan Tree’s group wide environmental initiative targeting climate change, Greening Communities challenges our resorts to plant at least 2,000 new trees per year for the next 10 years. While the initiative will offset a small amount of the globally produced atmospheric carbon dioxide, the main goal is to drive greater awareness of climate change among our communities, associates, and guests.
SEEDLINGS
In 2007, Banyan Tree launched Seedlings, a group wide initiative to support communities by building capacities of young people. A concerted effort to harness Banyan Tree’s core competencies to support enhanced long term prosperity within communities, Seedlings aims to guide youths at risk of societal exclusion to achieve what may have otherwise remained beyond their means. The effort starts with mentorship, continues with scholarship, and completes with internship as a means to provide young adults with the motivation and means to complete their education and successfully enter the labour force as adults.
