My husband and I were at the National for a quick anniversary getaway May 16-May 18. We liked the hotel-Prime location, beautiful pool and outdoor area, great beach, and nice rooms. If it weren’t for what I read on tripadvisor prior to our stay I never would have known they were going through renovations. Our room was newly renovated with a nice size TV, comfortable bedding, nice shower with great water pressure, refrigerator, etc. The room was a bit on the small side but there was still plenty of room for 2 people. My issue with this hotel comes with how they value their guests. Unfortunately, the weekend we were there, the National was hosting a convention called Aqua Girl. We did not have any issue with the hotel hosting an event but what we did have a problem with is that this event essentially shut down the entire hotel to guests not associated with Aqua Girl. The pool was closed; we had to walk around the block to get into the hotel from the front because we were not allowed in from the beach access. Once we got to the front of the hotel the entire door was blocked by Aqua Girl attendees waiting in line to get inside. We spent the day on the beach since the pool and amenities were off limits but were told there would be no towels, bar or food service on the beach due to the event. I find it appalling that the National does not care one bit about their paying guests. I was stuck having to explain myself just to get into my own hotel. I was even told “I’ve heard a lot of stories like that today” when I tried to explain that I was a guest of the hotel. This was when I was told I would have to walk around the city block to get to the front of the building and explain my situation there. This hotel’s focus lies strictly in bringing in revenue by hosting these large events. Despite our terrible experience there was one individual who went above and beyond to make the best of our situation, Andi Campbell. Had it not been for her I would have completely lost my mind. I feel conflicted as to whether or not I would stay at this hotel in the future. Had this large, closed event not been going on all weekend our trip would have been perfect. However, I now have a bad taste in my mouth about how we were treated as paying guests of the hotel. My recommendations would be if you’re going to stay at this hotel call prior to booking to ensure there are no events during your stay that will close off some or all of the amenities the hotel has to offer. « less

We had a 7 night stay at The National in April 2013, and would recommend the hotel. Having read previous reviews we avoided the tower and booked a Cabana room with balcony overlooking the pool. The cabana room was spacious, clean and well maintained, and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was clean and had a good shower enclosure (N.B. no bath, though this was not a problem for us). The 62.5m lengths/lap pool is fantastic, we enjoyed a swim every day. Food was good at the pool bar - the greek salad was great. Chilled vibe at the National pool area, but at the weekend the DJ set from the next door Delano drowned everything else out. Fine for sipping mojitos, but not if you were planning a nap! Good base for exploring South Beach, it was quieter than the majority of Ocean Drive, which appeared to be 'party central'. Hotel restaurant was good but a bit pricey. We had no problems with the hotel. Did not hear any building work. Observed the repainting work, but it did not have a detrimental effect on our holiday. It is nice to see care and attention going into the restoration of a beautiful art deco building. « less

This is a nice property and it is a good value compared to neighboring hotels. We stayed in the main tower. The room is small(think many new York city or European rooms). They are stark as well with no art or color. Our friends stayed in the cabana are rooms were were large and also newly remodelled. The pool area is terrific and the bar staff very friendly. The renovation is annoying especially since nothing on the website indicates remodelling nor do they even have an apology sign in the lobby. The tile and product are stacked along the hall in the lower level of the hotel which is the hall you must use to access the pool so it is unsightly. The front staff were very nice and changed our room upon our request due to a bed issue. Also, there was a very nice bartender in the hotel bar who was overly friendly and provided us with some great history of the hotel. « less

The hotel is set in the best neighborhood among other luxury hotels and a few minutes walk too the hustle and bustle of Lincoln Ave. The rooms are clean with all high end amenities. The room wasn't that big though consider what we paid for it. The pool was great with access onto the beach and nice buffet food you can enjoy under a cabana. Would go back no probs but would also look at the cost comparisons with the neighboring hotels. « less

Dear Nick B,
Thank you for the feedback on your experience. We have received a lot of comments on room size. And for historic Art Deco hotels, it is not unusual for rooms to be more intimately scaled. We offer a number of other accommodations should one be looking for more space.
We do have an excellent location, and beautiful pool area with direct access to the beach as you mention. Also given your stay was in July 2012, you may wish to note that we have all newly renovated rooms, both in the cabana wing and in the historic tower.
We appreciate hearing about your experience, and thank you again.
Best Regards, National Hotel Executive Team

I stayed at the National last year and it was fine. Rather 3.5 stars in my book. And the restoration work was LOUD.
However, I was there last weekend (my friend was at the National and I stayed at the Raleigh) and her restored room (8th floor facing Collins) looked great! Spacious and quiet. Definitely 4 stars.
The National pool bar remains one of my favorite places to lunch. Even though I stayed at the Raleigh, we walked a block over for the National's yummy tuna sliders!
One suggestion to the National- get rid of that tacky astro turf out by the pool. BLECK. « less

Dear Tracyesq,
We are sorry that your previous stay was so greatly affected, and many thanks for stopping by to see the progress we have made during the recent renovation. We are very happy to hear about your recent experience as well as your friend's who stayed with us. We do have some improvements to make, look for ways to improve the pool area in the future.
The tuna sliders have been a favorite! Thanks for pointing this out!
