After a long fight from the UK I wanted to be pampered and for the hotel to take the strain; and the Mandarin did not disappoint.
Friendly, super-fast check-in followed by a terrific room with big views across SF and a power shower that had all the right settings; a waterfall to wake me up and lots of nice scrubs, gels and shampoos to clean me up. Vast, fluffy towels and dressing gown as standard.
Met colleagues for a drink in downstairs bar which had a very stylish, relaxed vibe. Big bar area and fantastic, comfy seats to relax in. Waiting staff offered great recommends on local beers and Californian wines, delighted to be asked and genuinely knew their stuff.
Did not eat a formal dinner but had buffet which was top-notch - especially seafood canapes - and then headed back to bedroom and the delights of a colossal bed. Air con was easily adjusted and did not disturb sleep.
Next morning check-out was painless, luggage whipped away from you and door staff extremely attentive getting a big party together and away without ever being officious. Superb service.
Only wobble was (typically) breakfast. Food was actually v. good - especially spicy Mexican eggs and sausages - but not nearly enough staff and some tables were messy and coffee was slow and weak. Once again; weird that a so-so breakfast service drags down such a great experience. « less

This hotel has amazing views ( if you are located high up that is) the hotel is also located very close to town. San faranciso is an amazinf city and the views from this hotel really express this. Maybe a little expensive with regards to cost of hotel compared the what you could get somewhere else in the world. « less

The hotel itself is nice and the views are one of a kind... your sitting above the fog...The food was good as well. One of the staff asked me if I knew 小田yuji, he is an actor in Japan. Although many media have reported that he is gay... he is still a closet case. One of the MO SF staff told me Yuji Oda was at the MO SF with his boy friend....This was after his marriage some random J chick.... Wow..Privacy should be respected but thanks for the cool information. « less

I don’t like to give poor reviews, however I must be honest and provide my experience at this hotel. Good things The location was perfect for us, but that was because we had a corporate party walking distance. Many many hotel choices in this diverse city and next time it will definitely be a different one. We needed a pair of cufflink and they lent them to us and had them to the room within 20 minutes. Had breakfast downstairs only because we paid in advance which was average. I would highly recommend going to Chinatown and experiencing something unique. Now the Bad things. The Price! Wow, to repeat… Average hotel, except the price. The Entry way was windy and not impressive. Again average, see the pic of what should have been a fabulous floral display. I have had better orchid arrangements in my home. Riding up the elevator a service personal entered on a floor. He asked what floor I wanted and then proceeded to stop 5 floors before mine. This didn’t put the customer first. Again, at these prices I am surprised there isn’t a service elevator. Saturday night they put the “weekly” schedule of events in SFO. However, they gave us one that was a week OLD. Errors are not acceptable at this level. For $200 a night less I would try a block away at the Omni. I looked at their reviews… The Mandarin has ONLY 148 reviews with 65.5% Excellent, whereas the Omni had a whopping 1728 reviews with a 72.7% Excellent. Listen to others! « less

Management response from MO_SANFRANCISCO, Public Relations Manager
Dear Valued Guest,
Thank you for staying at Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco and for reviewing on Trip Advisor.
On behalf of the team, we apologize sincerely for not meeting your expectations during your stay. We greatly appreciate all your valued feedback which we have taken immediate steps to address in our various departments.
It is indeed the case that in comparison to other hotels in the area, we don't have as many TripAdvisor reviews. This is due to the fact that since the completion of our entire hotel renovation last summer, TripAdvisor restarted our reviews from the beginning, deleting all prior reviews. The number of our guest reviews are now steadily climbing once more.
We hope we have the chance to demonstrate a more positive experience for you with a return visit in the near future.
Sincerely, Edwina Kluender

We always loved staying at the Mandarin Oriental. Lovely rooms, comfortable beds and impeccable service. Now, with the refurbishing, it's even better. The rooms are lighter in color, beautiful linens and the downstairs restaurant has been opened up to let in more light. It's roomy, airy and even more comfortable. When we checked in we were upgraded to a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Coming from Pennsylvania looking at corn fields most of the day, this was a real treat. The service was outstanding as usual. Looking forward to returning! « less
