A 64-room inn located in the heart of Charleston’s historic district, the Planters Inn combines the charm of old world hospitality with 21st century amenities such as high speed Wi-Fi Internet service throughout. The antique accented residential look, coupled with the courteous staff’s amiable attention to detail, creates the illusion of staying in one of Charleston’s great mansions – one with a nationally celebrated restaurant, Peninsula Grill.
The Inn’s two buildings wrap around a captivating courtyard, distinguished by palm trees, partierres and fountains, which provides visitors a delightful oasis from bustling downtown Charleston.
The original building was built in 1844 to house Hornick’s Dry Goods, an important emporium in the bustling City Market. In 1983 it became a hostelry, and eleven years later was purchased by the current owner, who embarked upon an ambitious renovation plan to make the Planters Inn one of the South’s finest small luxury hotels.
A $4 million expansion completed in 1997 generated 21 new rooms, enhanced the Inn’s captivating courtyard and added the Garden Room. The management’s vision for the Planters Inn was realized in early 1999, when it was accepted as a member of Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious international association of elegant, independently owned hotels and restaurants.
In 2008, the Planters Inn revealed the results of a multi-million dollar renovation project which significantly enhanced the Inn’s core facilities, both internally and externally. Outside, new stucco was added and all windows were reframed to provide a more effective barrier to sound and inclement weather. Inside, hardwood flooring was replaced and all furniture in the lobby was reupholstered, creating a fresh, new interior for guests arriving at the hotel. In the rooms and suites, walls were repainted with warmer colors and bathrooms were upgraded with new light fixtures. Accommodations were also enhanced with new drapery and carpeting, providing for a more comfortable stay. Heating and air-conditioning systems were significantly restored and a new business center was added for the convenience of business and leisure guests.

The historic area’s boutiques and bistros beckon right outside the front door, while the antique shops of King Street are a block away.
