Checkers wasn't always a Hilton. In fact, it's more of boutique hotel with a large sign only visible from a distance. It's a historic 1920's gem and located in the financial/gallery/museum area which makes walking just about anywhere super easy, even at night. The rooms are relatively small but extremely well appointed and the restaurant and bar are beautiful, with great service and food. The rooftop pool is great for a quick dip and views of the city. I especially like it because it so convenient. Walk to the museums (MOCA), Disney Hall, Gallery Row, the library (also renovated), the Jonathan Club, jewelry and fashion districts and several other hot night spots like the Edison (my favorite) or dining like Kendall's, another favorite. The prices are reasonable and the service is boutique. We leave our car there and cab it if we're going to Staple's Center (about $7.00). While the Ritz and JW Marriott are ideal if all you're doing is Staples and Convention Centers, I prefer Checkers, less hassle, better everything. « less

Great location, okay rooms, good service, but worst shower I have experienced in years!
I have stayed here on multiple occasions and have always enjoyed this hotel. On this most recent visit, things look like they have taken a downward turn.
Check in was fine and room appeared ok upon arrival. Once I began working in the room, I found that the entire room did not have a pen in it! Not a huge deal, but a big miss by the housekeeping department. Called the front desk and a pen was brought up. I noticed in the bathroom that the ceiling was badly stained and cracking. Needed maintenence attention... I looked for a bathrobe, and none was present. In past stays, I remember having had a robe in the room, not a huge deal, but plays into my downward turn for this hotel. Finally, while taking a shower, the noise was almost unbearable. It sounded like a pipe was going to explode and come through the wall! The pipes were clearly shaking and making horrific noises. The water pressure was pulsating on and off and the temperature was going from scalding to freezing with the vacillating pressure. I quickly turned off the hot water, rinsed the shampoo out of my hair, and jumped out. I checked out and told the desk clerk of my horrible shower and he seemed relatively un-phased. He thanked me for telling him and said that he would share with maintenence. But was not concerned in the slightest that one of the main functions of the hotel room (the shower) was not working and that I was not able to even finish bathing in his hotel. I did not expect him to comp the room, but would have thought that he might have offered up something for this major inconvenience. Instead, he seemed less than concerned.
This is still the best Hilton family property in downtown and I will most likely return for that reason alone, but poor attentiveness and rooms in disrepair make me believe that this particular hotel is headed in the wrong direction. « less

Stayed at the Hilton Checkers three times over the past 30 days for business. Location was convient for access to our business meetings, rooms are decent to above average and the service was very good. Breakfast's were a highlight among the meals at the restaurant. Bar gets a decent crowd in the evenings and has plenty of casual work space.
As noted elsewhere, it can be a noisy on the lower levels, so shoot for a higher floor. A credible alternative for business travelers. « less

I always fancy Hilton as one of my favourite hotel chains, but this Hilton in LA was rather disappointing. Save for the good location and the moderately comfy bed, I don't see why we should be charged the room rate of a four-starred hotel. The following was not provided in the room: 1. kettle; 2. tooth brush, tooth paste and all other basic hygiene essentials; 3. wardrobe; 4. bath robes; 5. iron and ironing board; 6. complimentary bottled water; 7. laundry bag; 8. slippers; 9. luggage bench; 10. hangers; and all other necessities that you will reasonably expect in any typical four-starred hotel room. Or, did they expect me to call the room service to beg for such provisions?
The only saving grace is probably the complimentary food voucher that settled our bill for room service. « less
