The location of the Cavalier Inn could not be matched if visiting the University of Virginia. It is literally adjacent to the campus. The rooms are pleasant and clean, and the desk personnel are professional and very friendly and very accommodating. The hotel rates are very moderate and that means that services and amenities are very limited. The complimentary breakfast is a real disappointment and almost what I would imagine prison food to be. I was a bit disappointed to see housekeeping people using the single personal computer available to guests. All that said, my stay was very pleasant and I would return but would plan on having breakfast elsewhere. « less

The Cavalier Inn is extremely well-situated at the corner of Ivy and Emmett, close to the main grounds, North Grounds, the Corner and the Athletic facilities of the University of Virginia, as well as the many stores and restaurants on Route 29. It is also inexpensive - I was able to secure a room for busy Reunion weekend for just $119 per night. This includes free wi-fi and continental breakfast. I suspect it is much cheaper most of the time.
The hotel itself is not very nice, however. It appears to have been converted from a motel to a hotel at some point. The rooms are dingy and outdated, with old plumbing fixtures, laminate counters, drab wallpaper and nicks and chips in the door jambs and paint. The bureau also had a sticky substance on it in our room. The bathroom is tiny and outdated. At least there was a nice flat screen TV in the room. The decor is, as you might expect, very UVA-themed.
The breakfast was also not very good, with typical fare at discount hotels - juice from a fountain, eggs, pastries, cold cereal and a waffle iron. The common areas include a decent-sized outdoor pool and a fitness center with some nice cardio equipment but only a few free weights.
Basically, it's the most cost-effective option to stay close to the University. It's safe and clean and has ample parking, but it's not luxurious, and not as nice as the website makes it appear. « less

The rates at this hotel are usually very low. I have booked for as low as $79 a night when others like the Hampton Inn and Courtyard by UVA were in the mid to high $100's. While those are nicer places, at $100 cheaper, I would rather stay here.
The rooms vary a bit so my stays have varied in quality. I have had a room with terribly loud A/C and I have rooms that were great. If not happy just ask to move. The breakfast is basic, but it's free so I don't know how you can complain. Free internet as well and the location is very convenient to UVA.
If it was the same price as Hampton Inn I wouldn't stay here, but when it is substantially cheaper it is a great value. If you are between this and the Red Roof there is no comparison. This is much much better. « less
