My girlfriend and I spent five nights at the Hotel Whitcomb on Market street. We really didn't mind the noise and traffic on the busy street. Union Square and the nearby shopping district is a pleasant fifteen to twenty minute walk. Sometime we took a bus or street car that runs in front of the hotel. The ambiance of the lobby, and really the entire hotel, reminded us of some of the European hotels we have stayed in. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant and were not disappointed. The menu was limited but included steak, fish, chicken and pasta. The kitchen closed at 9:00 p.m., though we were told in the near future it would stay open until 10:00 p.m. Unfortunately, the bar had the same hours, which didn't make sense considering there are no other bars nearby.
Our overall experience at the hotel was memorable, in part because of the staff that went out of its way to accommodate us and make our stay more pleasant. Larry Bell, San Francisco's only singing doorman, delighted us with a song and anecdotes from his singing career. The bellman, Angel, assisted us daily with all our needs and requests as did the concierge who provided helpful tour information. We will definitely stay at the Hotel Whitcomb on our next visit to San Francisco. « less

When I checked-in to the hotel last Friday night, I was extremely pleased to see that I had a manager assisting me. Manisha’s professional, polite, and expeditious manor was truly appreciated. Her cordial and friendly nature also added to my very pleasant check-in. I would also like to comment on Manisha going “above and beyond” in locating a room with a wonderful view. It really impressed me that she took the time to ask if there was anything regarding a room I might required… I mentioned any room with a view would be appreciated…. This historic hotel in the heart of San Fran's Civic Center district is beautifully appointed with custom mahogany trim, marble columns and crystal chandeliers. The rooms, while small, as most historic hotel rooms are, are very comfortable, clean and charmingly decorated. The staff, especially Kazi Ahmed, Director of Guest Services, are all extremely helpful and willing to go above and beyond to make your stay at the Whitcomb excellent. « less

After getting this Hotel allocated through Hotwire we were pleasantly surprised on arrival. It is central, charming and above all the service was outstanding. If you are lucky enough to get Harvey on reception you won't be disappointed. He was so helpful and obliging. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms very tidy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the place to family and friends. Oh, and I thought the "old world" charm was an added bonus as was the location to restaurants and transport.
