You walk into your parents time in the 1940's with bowls full of 50 white and red anthuriums everywhere you look. The huge round gold glass and iron lights above you are the original lighting,There is a small window of "gatsby" dresses to show the fashion of the time. The one shop the bloew my mind was heavily beaded purses od fish, large shells and the best was a GUITAR for the rockers wives that stay there, I have yet to cost how many thousands of dollers they cost. The outdoor reastaurant had lounges and bar looking onto the beach, with hawaiian soft band playing, the ambiance we immediately felt was total relaxation in the upmarket enviroment If I had $1000 a day to spend on a hotel this is in the bucket list.I was in love as soon as I walked in the door.. « less

We stayed at this hotel for 5 days at the end of April. The room was small, and the balcony quite ugly with painted concrete floor and dividing wall. The rooms have shutters and you can hear them open and close next door and above. The bathroom was awful. The shower was in the bath right next to the toilet. Only one sink, all cramped. We couldn't use the airconditioning as it was so noisy and cut on and off all night. We had this attended to, but can't be fixed as this is how it is. We had a room in the tower, and it would never stay here again, even if it was for free. The swimming pool is tiny, you can't swim in it There is another pool a little bit bigger, but quite unacceptable for what we thought was a 5 star hotel. Wait times checking in was long. Staff were not familiar with the layout of rooms. We asked for a quiet room and were put next to the lifts oposite the service door. After the first breakfast we had breakfast at another hotel every day and all our meals at other hotels. Pleased to leave. « less

We were greeted by courteous valet & bellman. While checking in (which was quick) we were given hibiscus tea and cool clothes to refresh with. The grounds are stunning, the large porches with rocking chairs & couches are more than inviting. We did have drinks and an appetizer the Mai Tai Bar. It was a nice place to grab a drink and a quick bite while people watching. This hotel is very close to lots of shopping, whether upscale or souvenir shopping. Everyone we encountered at this resort was happy, helpful and courteous. We stayed in a Garden View room. The only thing that failed to meet our expectations was the extremely small bathroom-barely enough room for 1 person. However, this is the only place we would ever stay when we visit Waikiki again. Overall, we really liked this hotel. It is a beautiful hue of pink. Service is generally good. We stayed in the heritage section. The rooms are nice but rather small. You can walk to the Royal Hawaiian mall in less than a minute through the garden. The hotel is on the beach and the tower rooms face the Pacific ocean. The lounging chairs on the beach were rather expensive at $40 plus tax for one umbrella and two chairs. It is fine if you plan on spending the entire day there but expensive if you want to spend a few hours in the morning and a few in the evening. Azure (the onsite restaurant) had great review. The food was good, service excellent. The food on its own was a 8 on 10 but when compared to Alan Wong, was a 6-7 on 10 where Alan Wong was a 10.
The primary reason for giving this hotel a 4 start Vs. 5 star is lack of consistency in service. I would say 80% + staff were nice and always greeted/smiled whereas the other 20% did not. We did not get offered their signature welcome drink when we checked in around 2:30 Pm whereas everyone else we saw checking-in over the next few days seemed to receive it. Not a big deal but highlighted inconsistent service. Also, one evening the housekeeping came for turn-down service and when I opened the door, just asked if I need anything and was handing me the chocolates. She seemed very disappointed when I asked her to come back in half-hour and do the turn-down. She was really nice after receiving a nice tip on return. This was another example of lack of consistent service. Besides the reception that lacked warmth, I must recognize the Concierge and the Car Valet staff for being super nice.
We also went to hotel Halekulani for lunch at the poolside restaurant. Loved the food and service there and all the staff in that hotel was super nice. The car valet also got us a few bottled waters when we were leaving. Later, one day when we were going for a hike and I asked the car valet at the Royal Hawaiian for bottle water, they said they don’t have it…….come on….every hotel of this caliber and even less has it. These are kind of things that show a clear lack of attention to detail, which puts this hotel not in the same category as a Halekulani or a Ritz or a Four Seasons. However, you can beat the fact that you are staying on Waikiki in a historic hotel where many heads of state and celebrities have stayed.
Must do in Oahu (there is probably a lot more but we had limited time):
1. Waikiki beach, especially at sunset 2. Snorkel, swim or just laze at Hanuma bay. Get there early – around 8 Am and bring your own umbrella, food, drink etc.
3. If you are a foodie or are celebrating a special occasion: a. Eat a dinner at Alan Wong b. Breakfast at Eggs n things « less
