They are doing maintenance all over the property. I understand it has to be done but they should have closed for a week or let us know at booking! It's ridiculous! I brought my 96 year old aunt for a few days of R&R and there are elevators down, doors blocked with scaffolding, and caution tape wrapped around various areas not to mention doors that aren't blocked are locked with no room key access, our room phone buttons don't work so whenever I need something I call the front desk from my cell and I spent 20 minutes trying to get water from a vending machine only to have SIX of them say sold out or it just ate my $$. When I went to the front desk over the frustrations finally the woman listened then said "I'm sorry" is all. Well I'm sorry to because I wish we would wish we had stayed somewhere else. If they choose to be open during all this they should have had upgraded us all to a section without the construction as there aren't very many of us here. Well happy 50th to you, wont be back to see another. After the spa review I just read from this past weekend I just cancelled my appt there too! « less

The Abbey probably should have shut down this week for a week of spring cleaning. Painting, caulking, gardening, pool closed, dock smelling like dead fish(they were there)! I'm sure this is a popping resort after May31st...but as guests for the past days we felt in the way! First night holes in our sheets...they changed them. Second time...blood on our sheets...they changed them! Breakfast is very reasonable & delicious. Room service was good in the evening. For $159 per night plus $12 resort fee..I wasn't impressed! « less

Where should I begin? To start this hotel is beautiful and the spa is beautiful.
That being said, the staff ruins the overall experience.
For the past couple of years we my sister and I have been treating my mother to a spa day every Mother's Day there (it is on pricey side.) It usually is a nice experience. The last time we went.
We booked spa services for all three of us. We arrived and things were going well until we were having lunch at the poolside and I broke a glass by accident. When the manager came to clean it. I went to apologize to her and she snapped at me, telling me there is no glass allowed. Well then maybe they should not serve our wine in glass wine glasses then. It was rude but I let it go.
Then we booked pedicures for all of us at the at the same time. They started my mothers and mine at the same time and my sister had to wait 20 mins. That's not ok, especially for how much they cost. That was upsetting.
Then I got my eye brows waxed and the lady ripped my skin and I had a scar on my eye for two weeks and my anniversary was coming up with my husband who is in the army and I haven't seen him for a year. I talked to the spa manager first and she was very rude. Telling me there is nothing she could do but give me half my money back. Then I called the manager and told him what happened, he seemed nice at first but then it took him weeks to get back to me. I left 5 messages for him in 2 weeks time and every time I called he was never there. That is so unprofessional. He finally got a hold of me and offered a free night and dinner on him.
I went back with my husband and it was ok. The spa manager didn't apologize and I asked to see the manager to thank him, once again no where to be found. Overall I don't think I would return unless they offered to be nice and treat us like human beings. Very sad when all they need to do is put time and effort into treating people right. That's what makes a 5 star hotel in my book. « less

I stayed at the Abbey with my husband for a 3 day conference. Though I had not been to the Abbey in many years, I wasn't sure how it would be updated. The lobby was comfortable and welcoming, and I was pleased to see the design finish boards of the renovations they were doing/or had just been completed. The check in staff was pleasant, swift and helpful. Being a fairly large 2 story lodge/resort, it was a sprawling property with many buildings. It was like a labyrinth/maze with many corridors and stairwells. I would have appreciated better signage and directives to help me get to where I needed to go. We were quite pleased with our room. Average sized, with a nice sized and well appointed bathroom. The rooms overall looked fresh - perhaps redone in the last 4 or 5 years, and the style I would describe as comfortable elegant cottage decor. King bed was comfortable. Props to housekeeping - when we called at 7:30 am to tell them the hairdryer wasn't working, they sent one up to our room in about 8 minutes. Also, when I returned to the room late morning, housekeeping had already been to our room, cleaned and picked up for us, which was very much appreciated. It was too cold to enjoy the lovely harbor or lakefront, but it looked nice thru the windows. « less
