The village now known as Fontana was first inhabited by the Big Foot band of Potawatomi, who were drawn to the area's natural beauty, abundant game, and rich soil. The tribe was forced to relocate in 1836, the same year the first European settlers built a log cabin near modern-day Pioneer Park.
During the 1870s, many wealthy Chicago families chose Lake Geneva as the spot for their second homes. After the Great Chicago Fire, these homes became full-time residences. In 1875, Edward E. Ayer built the first grand estate in Fontana. His property eventually became the renowned Abbey Springs golf course.
Today, Fontana-On-Geneva Lake remains a gorgeous getaway spot with all the benefits of a close-knit community. Whatever your reason for visiting Fontana, you'll want to find the right hotel that allows you to experience the village's memorable charms.
