Orangeburg has played a large role in history for a number of reasons. It was home to Camp Shanks, the largest World War II Army embarkation camp. Also known as “Last Stop USA,” Camp Shanks was where 1.3 million US service personnel were processed before being sent to Europe. Orangeburg is also home to Rockland Psychiatric Center, once one of the world's largest psychiatric hospitals.
After World War II, Orangeburg retained few residents despite its proximity to New York City. Developers introduced modern suburban housing in the late 1950s, giving young couples a good alternative to life in the city. Today, Orangeburg is a thriving New York City suburb in its own right.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Orangeburg, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to enjoy everything the suburb has to offer.
