We were a fairly large group (14 people) and were delighted with the quality of the hotel, the helpful and friendly service, the freshness of the food and the location. The hotel is a converted prison. Two to three cells have been joined to create beautiful, comfortable rooms. You can visit an isolation cell, a historic cell, the former chapel, and tour guides can tell you stories about some of the more famous prisoners, but it is all done with a sense of humor. There is nothing disturbing or distressing. On the contrary, the connections to it's history make the hotel unique and they have managed to find the right balance between boutique hotel and preserving the past. Our group contained a number of elderly people and it is important to mention this when booking. The bathrooms have lovely deep baths, but they are tricky to manage for the physically handicapped. The hotel found accessible rooms for those who needed them. The lifts are extremely quick and there is no problem with access, provided that you let the staff know help is needed. We stayed for three nights and over that time there were some changes that needed to be made and the staff were very helpful, efficient and also pleasant. You really felt that they wanted you to enjoy yourself, it wasn't just a job. The meals are served in the cellar. It is comprised of a series of small rooms, which means that you can be together as a group without disturbing others. There is also less echo, which was greatly appreciated by those with hearing aids. The quality of the food was excellent: beautifully fresh and well presented. The hotel is located just off the center of Helsinki, in a beautiful quarter surrounded by water, which makes it peaceful and beautiful for an evening walk. There is a tram stop immediately outside the hotel (No. 4) which takes you close to the main attractions. The tram runs very frequently, even in the evenings, making concerts easy to attend. There was also off street parking available.

Hotel Katajanokka fulfils the expectations of travellers looking for an exceptional quality. Inside the old brick walls, a fascinating world of contrasts opens up - a modern premier-class hotel built in a historic prison setting.The red brick walls house 106 magnificent and luxurious rooms. Stylish decor and unique atmosphere effectively take your mind away from the busy working day and intensive travelling. The thick walls ensure a good night's sleep and first class conveniences are available to meet even the most demanding requirements.The verdant and spacious Linnanpuisto Park surrounding the hotel provides an ideal opportunity to relax. In the summer guests can sit on the idyllic terrace under the shade of maple trees and listen to the muted city sounds. In this peace and quiet it is easy to forget that downtown Helsinki is just 10 minutes away by tram. By walking the trip takes about 15 minutes. The oldest part of Hotel Katajanokka dates back to 1837 and the main part to 1888. The building originally served as a county prison and pre trial detention centre. The prison was closed down in 2002. The open central corridor, red brick outer walls and the high wall around the park are protected by the National Board of Antiquities and serve as a reminder of the building's long and colorful history.Following extensive restoration work, a high-quality and modern hotel opened its doors in May 2007. The standard meets the needs of customers who are accustomed to the highest quality.
