I coordinated a group (20 people) stay at Valentin in December 2013. This is our 7th Five star, adults only, all-inclusive stay in the Cancun area in the past 7 years (six times as a couple though and not with a large group). Valentin fell short versus some other properties we have stayed at recently (Excellence, Riu Palace, Royal Hideaway, etc). We have stayed at an incredible mix within this segment so we've got fairly good comparables to draw from after our stay at Valentin Maya. Great parts: beautiful grounds, pool areas and lobby, beach chairs & cabana availability not an issue, outstanding beach, alcohol are drinks are quality, clean. Average parts: food was good (not excellent but very tasty, with the exception of room service which was not good), small gym (if it matters), very large grounds (lots of walking to beach area, restaurants, pool, lobby, etc.; not bad though if you don't mind a little walk through beautiful tropical forests). Took everyone a couple days to understand the layout without a map to get places. Rooms were nice but nothing I would write home about particularly. Balconies had poor views and very few that could see the ocean (not meaning ocean front but just to see or hear the waves). Too large a complex. Bad parts: service (staff was generally pleasant but at the restaurants they were very sub par relative to other 5 stars). It must be a misguided policy of some sort or due to understaffing but I noticed they would hold wait lists for tables for 30-45 minutes when there would be literally a dozen available tables throughout the restaurant. They would spend countless minutes resetting recently vacated tables only to sit empty for our entire dinner while couples we knew were waiting for upwards of an hour. I mentioned this almost every night to the staff and they ignored me or repeated a polite but meaningless response. This drove us crazy to fight with staff that many tables recently opened and they had a lobby full of guests they refused to seat. Stay away from Valentin if hassle free dinners are important. Management arranged car service, but on both legs to and from the airport they tried to double the fees by bringing extra cars. When management tells you 8-10 people per van is $120 but they claim they only had two cars and they tried to force us to pay $240 (since they had two vehicles). Normally I would fault the service themselves but I feel this is the resorts issue to handle since they arranged the company. Car service I arranged through the front desk never arrived for our return to the airport and the staff could care less and was in no hurry to resolve for us. Waited for taxis. Many more instances I won't bore you with where service was average or bad. This happens to be a very important element for my wife and I (maybe we were just spoiled with Excellence and RH!). We are not high maintenance for luxury things but prompt and attentive service is a must for us and Valentin failed here fairly badly. With that said, it was not bad enough to ruin the trip. In fact we very much enjoyed ourselves at this resort and despite the service I'm confident people will love the facilties, drinks and beaches. Unfortunately for Valentin Maya, the management running some incredible and equally priced resorts nearby have them beat handedly as it stands now. With proper management and service the place would be certainly on par with the other greats in the area, unfortunately, we probably won't be back soon to find out.
