Camp Carson was established in 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The camp was named in honor of General "Kit" Carson, who was an early explorer of the West during the 1800s. In 1954, the camp formally became Fort Carson. With all that history, it's no wonder the base draws military and history buffs to the area.

Of course, many people come to Fort Carson and the neighboring community of Colorado Springs to visit friends and family members in active military service or to tend to government business. You can enter and visit Fort Carson if you have a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, vehicle registration, and photo identification.

Once on base, you can take a tour of the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel at Fort Carson, one of the most popular manmade sites in Colorado, from Monday through Saturday. While on base, you can also check out the B-52 display and the Thunderbird Airmanship Overlook.

Not all attractions need a pass, however. The 4th Infantry Division Museum is located on the base perimeter, just outside Gate 1. Come here to check out the impressive display of tanks, helicopters, and military vehicles that surround the building. Inside the museum, you'll learn all about the Fighting Fourth, from their World War days to their famous involvement in the capture of dictator Saddam Hussein. For more local military history, head to the National Museum of World War II Aviation in nearby Colorado Springs.

If you want to try your hand at shooting or get in some target practice, visit the Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex, where you can shoot all day for a $10 fee. The complex is conveniently located on Mesa Ridge Parkway, right before you enter the Fort Carson base.

Head to Cosmo's Magic Theater in Colorado Springs for a night of magic performances, comedy, or live music. You can also live like it's the most wonderful time of the year (almost) all year long at The North Pole and Santa's Workshop. Join Santa and his elves for caroling and a ride on the Candy Cane Coaster and Santa's train. The park is open May through Dec. 24.

You can see how the world's best athletes train for competition when you tour the Olympic Training Center or visit the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs.

Colorado is known for its world-class breweries, so plan your own Colorado microbrewery tour. Start at the Colorado Mountain Brewery in Fort Carson, and then head to Great Storm Brewing or Cockpit Craft Distillery in Colorado Springs.

Whether you're in town to visit the base, do some hiking, taste some microbrews, or do some business, you'll marvel at the natural beauty and amazing experiences that await you in Fort Carson and Colorado Springs.
