Property Description
Villa Ciconia is situated in Umbria, on the outskirts of Orvieto, 2 km from the Florence-Rome motorway exit.It is an elegant Villa which dates from the 15th century and is surrounded by an age-old park between river Chiani and Carcaione.Local historiography tells that “Villa Ciconia” was originally a Roman tower,“La Turchinetta”, and was property of “Monaldeschi” of Cervara married with Catherina of Sweden. This enlargement was commissioned to Ippolito Scalza (1532 - 1618)by the then owner of the tower Vincenzo Butius.The garden is a real park of 10,000 square meters, surrounded by 3 courses of water that make it a peninsula, with ancient Trees, Holms, Palms, roses, bamboos and other typical Mediterranean plants. In spring and summer it is colored by flowers.Butius, suffering from bad health, was advised by doctors to live near a river, the first airconditioning. The villa was then built, so that the Carcaione stream ran under one of the arches which upheld the structure.River deposits, with time, submerged the ground floor and therefore the “piano nobile”- is now on the first floor.The Restaurant-Pizzeria, on the ground floor is in the main hall with a lacunar ceiling with engraved and decorated stripes, painted with allegorical motifs and landscape scenes. One can admire a stone fireplace which is thought to be realized by “Scalza”.The excellently run Restaurant offers genuine Umbrian culinary cuisine. The twelve unique rooms, whose windows overlook the park, are on the first floor .Careful reconstructuring has retained all the original features of the villa (thick walls, large beams, and terracotta paving) although guaranteeing every comfort and the original atmosphere .
