Paul Brown Stadium is the home of the National Football League's Cincinnati Bengals. Construction began in 1998 after county voters approved a small sales tax increase in order to fund the stadium. The Bengals had previously used the aging Riverfront Stadium , sharing it for many years with Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds. The Bengals complained that the stadium was outdated and did not allow them to compete financially with larger market teams. There was speculation that the franchise might move to another city if their demands for a new stadium were not met. The new stadium opened in August of 2000, in time for the NFL football season. It cost about 450 million dollars to build and construct. Paul Brown, the original owner of the Bengals and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is the stadium's namesake.
