Jensen Beach was named after its first resident, John Laurence Jensen, a Danish immigrant who chose the site for his pineapple plantation in 1881. Pineapple farming became a big business in Jensen Beach, and the town was named the Pineapple Capital of the World in 1895. During this time, local farmers shipped more than one million boxes of pineapples every summer to cities around the United States and the world.
However, the local economy took a hit when the icy 1895 winter decimated pineapple crops in small local plantations. Fires in 1908 and 1910 destroyed the remaining plantations and most of Jensen Beach. Yet the town refused to lay down. Instead, local farmers began cultivating resilient citrus fruits. Jensen Beach's legacy of pineapple growing was never forgotten though. Every November, local residents and visitors celebrate the area's agricultural roots with the Jensen Beach Pineapple Festival.
When should you visit Jensen Beach, FL?
Jensen Beach doesn't experience a summer tourist rush to the same level of more popular Florida coastal towns, but you will find the area is more crowded from June to August than at other points in the year. Average highs around 90 degrees Fahrenheit are also common, which can be too hot for many visitors. You're best visiting earlier during spring, when the temperatures are a few degrees cooler and the crowds thinner. Hotels also tend to discount their prices in the shoulder season.
Fall also has pleasant temperatures, but the area is prone to hurricanes. While they don't always occur, winds can exceed 100 miles per hour in some cases. Winter is much warmer than in many parts of the nation, with highs in the mid-70s being common. Many Americans travel during this season to escape the chilly cold, and accommodation prices rise in response. If the idea of a more temperate winter appeals to you, book early.
