Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya, A.C. (FHMM) and The Haciendas, arise from a group of Mexican entrepreneurs who were committed to Mexico’s cultural and environmental sustainable development of the country and of the Yucatan Peninsula specifically. In the early 90s, the first step in the Yucatan region is undertaken by the creation of The HaciendaS, a business project that arises with the creation of a route of 5 boutique hotels operated by “Starwood Hotels and Resorts”: Hacienda Temozón, Santa Rosa and San José in the Yucatan; and Puerta Campeche and Uayamón in Campeche –carefully restored sisal-producing haciendas with a clear vision to set them up in a Sustainable Tourism Model –which would bring a socio-economic boost of micro-regional impact while respecting and preserving the culture and natural resources. The guiding principle was the vision of Sustainable Tourism, working as an engine to achieve community development and improve the quality of life of rural Mayan communities.
