"Needs Work"
Overall Score2.0/ 5
This property needs work. Nothing is up to current standards here which makes it creepy feeling. Very disappointed. The reviews are completely misleading. I've been staying in hotels in CA and Oregon for a week now, all about the same price and this one is by far the worst sub par.

"A Nightmare!"
Overall Score1.0/ 5
We booked a room online while on the road traveling for a one night stay that night. We received an email confirmation and our credit card was charged. After a long day of traveling we were looking forward to a hot shower and some much needed sleep. When we arrived to check in we were asked by the desk clerk if we were Humboldt county residents or essential service workers. I said I was an essential service worker in Arizona and thought possibly we were going to get a discount. Instead he asked if I was traveling for business and when I said "no" he said, "I'm sorry but we won't be able to host you." I didn't fully comprehend what he was saying so I asked him what exactly he meant and he explained that the county's Covid 19 restrictions in place they can only "host" county residents or essential workers traveling on business. I was dumbfounded as we had a confirmed reservation and had already been charged. When I told him that, he said the reservation we made online was with a 3rd party company that probably wasn't aware of the restrictions. While I understand that the reservation wasn't made directly with the hotel, I pointed out to him that they should notify the 3rd party booking companies of their restrictions so that reservations can't be made. There was obviously something they should've done to prevent this as we weren't the only ones in this situation, because someone else tried too check in after us that was in the same situation. At that point we had no choice but to drive another two 1/2 hours, to Brookings, Oregon, the first community out of Humboldt county to try to find a room somewhere else. Unfortunately, being memorial day weekend and the Oregon coast all hotels were booked. The same was true at every community we drove to along the 101. We ended up sleeping for a couple of hours in our car in a parking lot after driving a total of almost 16 hours. with two kids! I understand the Covid 19 restrictions are different every in State, County and/or City, but hotels who allow 3rd party bookings should have some responsibility to keep those 3rd parties informed of their avialability/status. It's obvious the hotel was fully aware that the 3rd parties were continuing to make reservations and they apparently did nothing to stop it. Because of that, we were put in a horrible situation that was not our fault, one that was not only miserable but also dangerous. To top it off, I was unable to get through to the booking company and had to file dispute with my credit card company in order to get a refund.

Property Description

Fortuna's Independent Hotel for California's Redwood CoastThe majestic north coast redwoods, the many state parks, six wild and scenic rivers, miles of pristine, rugged California coastline, and an “avenue ruled by giants”; these are some of the reasons that bring you here.Craft and organic breweries, Victorian towns and seafronts, festivals and entertainment, all with a quirky, independent spirit; these are the things that keep you coming back. With these in mind, The Redwood offers a strong sense of place, reflecting that same independent spirit. Ideally located in sunny Fortuna, we are the perfect base camp to visit the California redwood coast. This connection to our area guides our hospitality. However, we are not only a team of Humboldt insiders enthusiastic about sharing this special place, we also take care of it. As a certified GreenLeader hotel we clean our comfy rooms chemical free, our bath amenities are spa-grade and eco-friendly, and every stay comes with a buffet breakfast that satisfies the lumberjack (or the treehugger) What can you expect from Fortuna's independent hotel? You can expect a small scale hotel that left the corporate, franchise environment to offer an experience with a proud sense of place. You can expect a hotel that is evolving as we make decisions that are aligned with Humboldt County's rich heritage and history. You can expect a little of the "un-expected".Located off US 101 in an area with traveler services, The Redwood seeks to be your one-of-a-kind choice amongst the small grouping of franchise hotels, restaurants, and gas stations in Fortuna. Steps from this small grouping of businesses are the final miles of Eel River, before it reaches the Pacific. Our central location serves as the ideal base camp to visit the many state parks and enjoy other outdoor activities in Humboldt County. The Humboldt County experience continues when you arrive at The Redwood.Murals in the lobby, pool area and stairwells offer insight into Humboldt's topography, ancient forests, lumber camps and the daily life of the Native American Weott tribe.A vintage kayak, rods and reels, and Jeff's grandfather's flies on display give a nod to the Eel River only 200 feet behind the hotel. You can follow it along the levy trail for a few miles, also known as the Riverwalk.A cowhide print area rug at the entrance reminds us of the local dairies and the cows found grazing nearby. The lobby wainscot is reclaimed redwood brought from a dismantled water tower just north of Arcata, a reference to the area's lumber industry and history.
