"Bowling Green, Kentucky, offers a lively art scene and the Capitol Arts Center is a must-see for any visitor."By Gabby Jones, Travel Writer
Bowling Green, Kentucky, is a destination with a rich history, dynamic city life, and home to the stunning Capitol Arts Center. The Capitol, situated downtown on Fountain Square at 416 E. Main Street, is an art deco-style performing arts theatre. Built in the late 1890s as the Columbia Theatre, it was a hub for vaudeville performances before transitioning into the Capitol Theatre. This movie house ran for over three decades from the 1930s. In 1967, the venue closed its doors, standing vacant for ten years until the Bowling Green-Warren County Arts Commission purchased the building. Following a $1.3 million investment, it was transformed and reopened as the Capitol Arts Center in 1981, maintaining its 1930's allure.
Over the years, the Capitol Arts Center has continued to thrive, receiving support from organizations like the Kentucky Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and even a $6.7 million grant from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This funding led to the establishment of the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, Inc. (SKyPAC), which managed the Capitol until 2021 when The Warren County Public Library took over. Now, the Capitol Arts Center hosts various events, including concerts, author visits, films, and community gatherings. The building also houses a satellite branch of the Warren County Public Library, a used bookstore called Capitol Books, and a conference room available for reservation.
