Property description
Lindeth Howe hotel in the Lake District offers a warm welcome and a unique historical experience, having once been the home of renowned English writer Beatrix Potter. With a focus on ensuring all guests have a wonderful holiday, the team at Lindeth Howe strives to create a memorable experience that leaves visitors eager to return again and again.
Lindeth Howe hotel has a rich history dating back to 1879, originally built as a holiday home for a wealthy mill owner from Manchester. The house was used by friends and family, including the Potter family, who made cherished memories during their stays. When Beatrix Potter's father passed away, she purchased the house for her mother, who lived there until her passing. This unique history is still celebrated today, with artefacts such as photos taken by Rupert Potter and letters sent by Beatrix to her publishers while she was staying at Lindeth Howe. The hotel's logo, written in Beatrix's own handwriting, is a treasured keepsake, made possible with the kind permission of Penguin.
Lindeth Howe hotel, with its 30-plus bedrooms, provides the perfect retreat to unwind and rejuvenate after a day of exploring the breathtaking Lake District National Park and its surroundings. The hotel's lounge and bar area pays homage to its Beatrix Potter heritage, making it an ideal spot to relax with loved ones over a pre- or post-dinner drink. Additionally, non-residents are also warmly welcome to come and enjoy the warm atmosphere and hospitality.
Lindeth Howe hotel has received prestigious recognition for its excellence in hospitality, earning awards such as the "Cyclist Welcome", "Walkers Welcome", and "One Step Ahead" honors, as well as its long-standing "Gold Award" from Visit England, a testament to its commitment to providing exceptional service and accommodations for guests.
Lindeth Howe hotel had a momentous 2023, celebrating two notable triumphs: being crowned the Cumbria Tourism Wedding Venue of the Year and receiving the esteemed Visit England Rose Award, which honors service excellence. This prestigious award is a remarkable achievement, as Lindeth Howe was one of only nine properties across all of Cumbria to be recognized with this distinction in 2023. The Gold Award from Visit England is awarded to celebrate accommodation establishments that outperform in their category, offering exceptional quality within their star rating. The awards help guests find special places where hosts go the extra mile, whatever the size, style, or star rating of the accommodation.
Lindeth Howe hotel was honored to host HRH The Earl of Wessex for dinner on September 27th, 2021, alongside the DofE awards team. The evening was a special occasion, and photographs from the event can be found in the hotel's history section in the hallway, a truly unforgettable experience.
What better place to come and stay or visit in the most beautiful English Lake District.
Holidays and breaks have been taken in the Lake District since before Roman Times, due to its beautiful scenery and a great literary and cultural heritage. Lakeland boasts many places to visit and explore, so there will always be a wide variety of activities to take part in. It has Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth connections, picturesque villages, and spectacular views. Whether you choose to visit in winter or summer, autumn or spring, you will be able to explore and appreciate the beautiful landscape and its changing colours with the seasons. The perfect antidote to hectic modern life.
The Lake District is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the United Kingdom, with high peaks and dazzling lakes, there is so much to see and do. Lindeth Howe sits in the heart of the National Park overlooking the largest lake in the country, Lake Windermere. Guests can sit on the sun terrace and enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine and relish in what the Lake Country has to offer. Bowness-on-Windermere often referred to as the heart of the Lake District, is only a short walk away. Here you can enjoy the many attractions and shops or take a cruise across Lake Windermere to other popular areas such as Hawkshead, Ambleside, and Lakeside.
Windermere is ten and a half miles long and up to 200 ft deep in places. The bed of the lake is owned by South Lakeland District Council, having been presented to Windermere Urban District Council by H.L Groves high sheriff of Westmorland in 1939. The water is owned by United Utilities who extract many gallons each day for use in the industrial cities of Lancashire.
There has been a ferry service across the lake for possibly as long as 500 years, the change from steam power coming in 1870. Flying boats have taken off from the lake, the first in 1911, and during the second world war Sunderland flying boats were built at White Cross Bay.
