The borough got its start in 1753 when Sussex County was formed. Present-day Hamburg was part of New Town then, and in 1762 it became part of the newly formed Hardyston Township. By 1920, Hamburg was incorporated as a borough in its own right, and was named after Hamburg, Germany. Several historic sites are viewable around town, including Joseph Sharp's Iron Works on Gingerbread Castle Road. The abandoned Iron Works played a large part in the Revolutionary War, during which time a British sympathizer used the facility to produce cannonballs for the British in secret.
Today, Hamburg is governed by six council members. It is served by the Sussex County Skylands Ride Service, which provides buses to Sussex, Sparta, and Newton. New Jersey Routes 23 and 94 intersect and pass through the community.
No matter your reason for visiting Hamburg, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to experience everything this beautiful borough has to offer.
When is the best time to visit Hamburg, NJ?
The best time to visit Hamburg is from late spring to early summer. Average highs hover around the mid-70s in May and early June, which is the ideal time to enjoy outdoor recreation throughout Hamburg. Best of all, you can enjoy discounted rates at area hotels before the peak tourist season arrives.
Both hotel rates and average temperatures creep upwards during the summer. July is Hamburg's hottest month, averaging 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the heat and humidity, a summer getaway in New Jersey gives you the perfect chance to explore the area's indoor attractions, shopping outlets, and restaurants.
By September, average highs are back in the mid-70s and accommodation rates start going back down. Keep in mind, however, that colorful fall foliage attracts many leafers to the area in October, and hotels often increase their rates based on demand. Even so, you can't beat an autumn scenic drive in New Jersey.
Hamburg winters are very cold with average lows settling around 18 degrees Fahrenheit in January. Thanks to the borough's proximity to the slopes, however, you can enjoy plenty of skiing opportunities during your stay. The only downside is that inclement weather can put a damper on your travel plans, so pack plenty of winter gear and remain flexible.
