The area now known as Clarksville was first inhabited by unknown Paleo-Indian tribes prior to the Cherokee migration into the Tennessee River Valley. By the time Spanish explorers visited the area, it was home to tribes of the Yuchi and Muscogee people. The area was settled by Europeans in 1779, when James Robertson led a group of settlers from upper East Tennessee along Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road. From there, the town grew rapidly and flourished from tobacco trade and steamboats bringing goods to the area in the early 1800s.

Today, Clarksville is home to the Fort Campbell Army installation, major industrial employers, and several cultural points of interest. No matter your reason for visiting Clarksville, it's important to find the ideal hotel that places you near major landmarks and attractions.

Best Time to Visit Clarksville, Tennessee

Clarksville's peak tourist season is in the summer from June through August. While the season brings ideal weather for tourism, it does mean increased demand for accommodations. If you're willing to pay a bit more for your hotel room, however, you can't beat a trip to Clarksville in the summer.

To enjoy more reasonable rates, try to plan your trip in the spring and fall off-seasons when school-aged children are in school. The popular Riverfest takes place each year in early September, bringing art, music, and family-friendly activities to the Cumberland River area.

Although most tourists shy away from Clarksville in the winter, it's actually the perfect time to enjoy holiday festivities. The holiday season kicks off numerous events like Christmas on the Cumberland, ice skating at Downtown Commons, Drive Thru Christmas Lights at the Clarksville Speedway, WinterFest at Erin's Farm, and Trees of Christmas at the historic Smith Trahern Mansion. Best of all, hotel rates hit annual lows during the winter, allowing you to enjoy the festivities on a budget.
