Learn About Texas History in Channelview, Texas

Houston got its start only miles from Channelview at the junction of the Buffalo and White Oak bayous in 1826. The Allen brothers, the city's founders, anticipated that shipping would be a key industry, and today, Houston's ranking as one of the top cities in the nation proves their theory correct. The city relies heavily on shipping, and The Houston Ship Channel continues to play an important part in the city's economy to this day. The Channel and the Port of Houston rank first in the world in foreign tonnage and sixth in size overall.

Historic monuments and important sites can be found throughout Channelview and neighboring La Porte, only a few miles away. After the fall of the Alamo and before the battle of San Jacinto, thousands of Houstonians fled in terror of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army. Nathaniel Lynch began ferry service in 1822 to get the frightened citizens to safety. Harris County has operated the Lynchburg ferry ever since. You can explore monuments detailing these key moments in Texas history at Juan Seguin Historic Park.

San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is marked by an impressive obelisk topped with a Texan star, and it overlooks a reflecting pool. The imposing monument marks the site of the battle that earned Texas its independence from Mexico. Sam Houston and his army defeated Santa Anna in 1836. The obelisk rises 15 feet taller than the Washington Monument and is the tallest column monument in the world. You can take an elevator to the top and survey the surrounding land and waterways.

Check out the San Jacinto Museum of History in the base of the obelisk, including artifacts, exhibitions, and films for more details on the decisive and historic victory, as well as Texas' evolution from a Mexican state to independent republic and, finally, annexed by the United States. Military service members and veterans get free admission to this site. Be sure to visit in April for the San Jacinto Day Festival, which includes living history experiences.

Spend the rest of your afternoon in La Porte exploring a different chapter of history at the Battleship Texas State Historic Site near the Houston Ship Channel. This battleship was commissioned in 1914 and is the only surviving U.S. Navy vessel to have served in both world wars. It was also the first battleship to be turned into a museum, starting in 1948. Clamber around below decks to see how Navy service members used to live, from the mess hall to the bunks. The monument is open seven days a week, and military members and veterans get free admission.

After all that history, you'll want some refreshment. You won't find a better place for fresh seafood and spectacular views than at the Monument Inn in La Porte. The family can fill up on all-you-can-eat seafood and delicious, fresh-baked cinnamon rolls all at an incredible value. Kids will love watching the huge vessels cruise through the Houston Ship Channel right by the Lynchburg Ferry while they eat.

Channelview offers an ideal blend of convenience to Houston with quiet and comfort in the suburbs. Check out Channelview, Houston's historic waterfront destination.
