William J. Stafford, the namesake of Stafford, Texas, received the land that would become Stafford in a land grant in 1824. He began farming with a horse-powered cotton gin, which he used to bale his and other farmers' crops. The community became known as Stafford's Point.
In 1836 during the Texas Revolution, General Santa Ana led the Mexican Army to Stafford's Point and ordered them to burn it to the ground. By 1840, settlers had returned and had already begun rebuilding the town. It became a thriving commercial community and the final stop of the inaugural 20-mile rail line that was the first railroad in Texas. A century passed before the community was incorporated as the city of Stafford in 1956, with a population of 500.
