Property description
Built during the early 1700s during the Rococo period, Le Chateau, was originally constructed as the town's primary hotel that comprised expansive gardens and outbuidlings central to the hotel's operation. As a reflection of Le Chateau's importance to the community's development, it was classified as an historical monument in May 2001 and is a major tourist attraction in Chateauponsac. During its lifetime Le Chateau has undergone many iterations being the town's first Mairie, and the Gendarme Headquarters during the early 1900s. For over 60 years the world renowned academic and the town's doctor, Dr Georges Lowry, resided at Le Chateau. For 30 years during the mid 1850s Count de Ceile owned Le Chateau up until the time of his death. Today it is a privately operated an award winning international guest house across three floors that has undergone an internal and external restoration programme since 2017 that has salvaged and restored many original features as possible to return Le Chateau to its halcyon days. Le Chateau is situated in Châteauponsac, an ancient fortified town, where several monuments from the Middle Ages can be admired, such as a Benedictine priory, a Romanesque church; the Church of St. Thyrsus; and the remains of a Roman bridge.
