The Kingman center is around the area of Route 66 Museum and the area of Museum of History and Arts.

Kingman is the county seat of Mohave County in Arizona. This city has over 29,000 residents, while the nearby communities of Golden Valley and Butler take the total population to more than 45,000. In the Mojave language, the city of Kingman is called “Huwaalyapay Nyava.” An officer in the U.S. Navy followed orders from the War Department to build a federal wagon road in the area that became Kingman in the mid-1800s. In the White Cliffs Canyon, you can still see the remnants of that original wagon road. More from this guide...

At the time Kingman was founded, the state was still the Arizona Territory. During World War II, it housed a U.S. Army Air Force airfield where soldiers and airmen participated in aerial gunnery training. When the war ended, the airfield became the largest reclamation site in the U.S. for obsolete military aircrafts. The city sits on the edge of the Mojave Desert and has its own airport nine miles northeast of the downtown area.

When to Visit Kingman, Arizona

Although Kingman sits near the desert, the climate is cold and semi-arid. The city receives more precipitation than a hot semi-arid climate and the temperatures in the winter months are lower than you might expect, given its proximity to the Mojave Desert. During the summer months, highs are in the mid-90s but rarely exceed 100-105 degrees Fahrenheit. The winter temperatures fall below freezing overnight although the highs are in the 50-60 degree range. Snow occasionally falls, although it's rarely more than a slight dusting that melts when the sun comes out.

If you don't mind the cold, pay a visit to Kingman during the winter months. The cooler temperatures bring fewer visitors, so you can score great deals on hotel rooms. When the summer hits, you might see a spike as travelers take their vacations to see the Mojave Desert and learn the history of this fascinating city. The spring and fall seasons offer beautiful views of the surrounding desert with pleasant weather. No matter when you visit, it's important to use plenty of sunscreen as the higher elevation can result in sunburns, even when it's overcast or cloudy.
