In 1640, the Dutch West India Company purchased the area now known as Valley Stream from Rockaway Native Americans. Despite the exchange, the woodland area wasn't developed for another two centuries. By 1840, about 20 farming families lived in what was known as Fosters Meadow. Since the community didn't have its own post office, residents had to utilize the Hempstead post office until 1843. That year, the newly dubbed community of “Valley Stream” established its own postal service. Once the railroad arrived in 1869, the village's population grew exponentially.
Today, Valley Stream is home to significant Irish American, German American, and Italian American populations. “Money Magazine” also ranked the Village as the best place to live in New York in 2017.
