Located in Benton County, with a common border with West Siloam Springs in Oklahoma, Siloam Springs is in Arkansas' northwestern corner and the Ozarks range's southwestern quadrant. The area is notable for beautiful Dogwood trees, creeks, rivers, and freshwater springs. These springs are said to have medicinal and healing properties and are the main reason for the town's formation in this location.
People from the Cherokee Nation frequented the area long before the first European settler, Simon Sager, established his farm to the west of the present town in 1835. Sager Creek gets its name from him, and his farmhouse now lies in John Brown University's campus.
The town came into being after John Hargrove platted it on his land in 1880 and promoted the healing springs there. It soon became popular as a tourist destination, and Hargrove incorporated it as Siloam Springs in 1881. The Chautauqua movement constructed a building here in 1885, built a larger one in 1907, and organized religious conferences and entertainment shows in the town.
The advent of the Kansas City, Pittsburgh & Gulf Railroad brought industrial growth, revived the apple farming, agricultural products industry, and the tourism sector, and the town prospered as a trade and shipping center. It also became an educational hub with the founding in 1919 of the Southwestern Collegiate Institute that later became John Brown University.
Today, the apple, agricultural, tourism, and many small business industries continue to thrive in Siloam Springs, and the surrounding natural settings attract adventure-seekers interested in mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, and camping.
