People were calling the Schererville area the “Crossroads” long before Indiana became a state. Several Native American trails intersected in the area, and those trails later became wagon routes for settlers traveling west. One of those settlers was Nicholas Scherer, who founded his namesake community at the southern tip of Lake Michigan.
Today, Schererville is still considered the nation's crossroads thanks to its modern roadways, which include U.S. Highways 30 and 41. Interstates 80, 94, and 65 are also located nearby, making Schererville a convenient home base for travelers. The town has also been named one of Money Magazine's “100 Best Places to Live in the United States.” Many residents and visitors fly into Chicago Midway International Airport or O'Hare International Airport.
Whatever is on your itinerary, you'll want to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything Schererville and surrounding areas have to offer.
When should you visit Schererville, IN?
Since Schererville is located close to Chicago, you may want to avoid peak tourist season to save money on your hotel room. Despite being a popular summertime destination, the Chicago metropolitan area is worth the trip even if you have to deal with crowded attractions. Average summer temperatures hover in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and rarely drop below the high 50s. Since temperatures can fluctuate so dramatically on Lake Michigan, you may want to pack a variety of clothes to accommodate both strong breezes and high humidity.
The spring and fall shoulder seasons are prime times to visit Schererville. Not only can you find more manageable crowds around Chicagoland, but the daytime temperatures are also ideal for walking around and enjoying outdoor attractions. Spring rains are common, however, and nighttime temperatures can drop into the 40s. Come prepared with a light jacket, layers, and an umbrella.
Schererville faces biting temperatures during the winter months, which can keep many visitors away. If you don't mind extreme weather, you could save substantially on your accommodations. Be sure to remain flexible in your travel plans and book refundable flights and hotels in case a severe storm arrives. On clear days, head into Chicago and enjoy the indoor museums and shops.
