Located just 13 miles to the west of the downtown Chicago loop, the village was originally founded by a treaty in which the federal government had given the land to Che Che Pin Qua. This was in honor of the services he provided for settlers during the massacre at Fort Dearborn.
After his death, the area's rich and fertile soil drew in farmers as well as trappers and hunters. The first honorary mayor of the town, which was still yet to be incorporated, was William Kolze. In 1881, he purchased over a hundred acres of land where he built what is known as the White House Inn.
Once the railroad came through, the area became a popular spot for day trips and weekend excursions from those in Chicago and the surrounding areas. The village was outfitted with picnic areas, dance pavilions, and saloons. The village gained its name after being incorporated in 1914. But it remained independent of Chicago even after the city bought a large tract of farmland close to the area to build the Chicago O'Hare Airport.
The town continued to grow and is now known as a popular place for tourists to visit who come in through the O'Hare Airport and are looking to enjoy the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago, and the surrounding areas.
The Best Time to Visit Schiller Park
Due to its location in the Midwest, you can expect the Schiller Park area to see all seasons. The summers are filled with warm weather and sunshine, the fall sees the beautiful changing of the leaves, winter sees cold temperatures and an abundance of snow, and spring is the time when the flowers will begin their early blooms.
By far the most popular time of the year to travel to Schiller Park is during the summer months, with peak tourist season occurring at the start of Memorial Day weekend and lasting until Labor Day. This is the time of year when you can enjoy everything the village and the surrounding areas have to offer. You will also have access to the summer tourist fun such as Navy Pier. The only problem you may run into traveling in the summer is the difficulty in finding accommodations and the higher price that will come with them.
Another beautiful season to travel is fall, especially if you plan to enjoy a football or baseball game from one of the Chicago teams. You will find a discounted rate on some hotel rooms during this season. But be cautious of traveling in late November if you plan to avoid the snow. The spring season is also a great time to travel; you'll see slightly lower prices on accommodations than the summer months. But if the winter is long in the area, you may still be hit by an early spring snowstorm.
Those looking to travel at the lowest prices may want to book their visit in winter. During the winter, you can enjoy many popular indoor activities, including museums, art galleries, and fine dining. If you travel during December, you can enjoy a memorable Christmas display that runs through the heart of downtown Chicago. Just remember that when traveling in winter, the O'Hare Airport can have problems with incoming and outgoing flights. Therefore, be sure to leave some wiggle room.
