Though construction was completed in 1995, the South Commons Softball Complex first made its debut as a sports center in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Ever since, national and international softball events have been hosted here.
The complex underwent a $4.8 million-dollar facelift just in time for the USA Softball International Cup in July 2019. The renovations included new HVAC equipment and plumbing improvements, new sidewalks and landscaping outside the stadium, new LED lighting, fire alarm system, updated Wi-Fi and internet access, modernized umpire rooms, and a new roof for the grandstand. Jointly funded by the City of Columbus and the Columbus Sports Council, this project has now made the South Commons Softball Complex one of the best in the region.
The South Commons Softball Complex is all set to host the 2020 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Softball World Series in May 2020, which features 10 teams. In the upcoming months, there are several events that will be hosted at the complex, including WSL, BSC, USA Softball Qualifiers, NCSA World Series, and CAMsports.
What's more, the South Commons Softball Complex was awarded the 2019 Complex of the Year.
