Welcome To Newport Jazz Festival Hotels. The Newport Jazz Festival has been going strong since 1954. Founded by Elaine and Louis Lorillard, it began in Newport, Rhode Island, moved to New York City in 1972, then continued in both cities beginning in 1981. It currently takes place in Fort Adams State Park in Newport every August. Many of the festivals have been broadcast on Voice of America Radio, and many of the recordings of performances have been sold through different record labels over the years.
