Welcome To Indy 500 Hotels. The Indy 500 first began in 1911 with Ray Harroun as the first winner. The race is held on 253 acres surrounding a 2.5 mile race track called the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today the race is the worlds' largest spectator sport. Race statistics are gathered on each driver based on starting and finishing positions, laps led and the number of laps completed. Each driver also competes based on fastest finishing times, with the first driver to cross the finish line receiving the largest amount of money.
