Welcome To Indy 500 Hotels. The Indy 500 first began in 1911 with Ray Harroun as the first winner. The race is held on 253 acres surrounding a 2.5 mile race track called the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today the race is the worlds' largest spectator sport.
