Before the airport's opening, Owasso's growth was slow. Settlers arrived in 1881, when it was called Elm Creek, in homage to the local waterway. When the Kansas, Oklahoma Central & Southwestern Railway Co. completed tracks through the area in 1899, the town enjoyed small growth. It also changed its name to Owasso, the Osage Indian word for “the end of the trail.” But by the time Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907, less than 400 people called Owasso home.
The arrival of the Tulsa International Airport had a more profound impact on Owasso's population. As air travel became more common, Owasso grew. By 1972, Owasso was incorporated as a city in its own right. Over the past three decades, Owasso's population has nearly tripled, rising from 11,151 in 1990 to nearly 32,500 in 2013, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
This growth is significant for the city, but Owasso still feels like a small town. This feeling is perhaps its greatest appeal for travelers. While many use it as a brief stopover for its proximity to Tulsa International Airport, others are only too happy to stick around and discover all this friendly city offers guests.
When should you travel to Owasso, OK?
The biggest concern for anyone planning an Owasso vacation is the likelihood of tornado outbreaks. Owasso is in Tornado Alley, the area in the Central Plains that often experiences tornado occurrences. Twisters are most common in late spring, although they've also been known to strike in early fall.
Severe weather capable of producing a tornado is less frequent during the summer, but Owasso's humid, subtropical climate means this season can be stormy and steamy, even if the winds don't pick up.
Owasso turns on its best weather for tourists during the early spring and late fall. While a chill can be in the air, especially when night falls, it's nothing a cardigan or coat can't take care of. Owasso's subtropical weather will make your days ideal for sightseeing.
