Plymouth was originally inhabited by the Dakota people who camped at the northern end of Medicine Lake. The explorer Antoine LeCounte discovered Plymouth in 1848 and enjoyed it so much he returned to settle there in 1852. The area grew rapidly during the Dakota War of 1862 with the addition of schools and hotels. Agriculture became an important industry, and by 1880 roads connected Plymouth to neighboring towns. Visitors took advantage of Plymouth's new accessibility and began enjoying vacations near Medicine Lake.
Plymouth enjoys life at a slower pace than Minneapolis, but it's no slouch. Instead, Plymouth is Minnesota's seventh largest city and the third largest suburb in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area. This friendly area gets the balance right, with just enough attractions to entertain tourists without overwhelming them. Discover the charm of Plymouth for yourself on your next Minnesota getaway.
When to Visit Plymouth, MN
Bitterly cold winters and steamy hot summers are unpleasant for tourists, so plan a spring or fall Plymouth break instead. Expect average highs of 40 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and average lows of between 25 and 50 through both these shoulder seasons.
Since spring and fall are outside the typical tourist seasons, hotel rates within Plymouth are affordable during these pleasant periods. If you're worried about crowds, you may want to avoid late May though, as college graduations bring many people to nearby Minneapolis; unable to find reasonably-priced accommodation in the city, many of these visitors head to Plymouth instead. If your heart is set on a May vacation, book your hotel two to three months in advance to score the best rates.
While June is typically Plymouth's wettest month, the city experiences rain throughout the year. Pack your umbrella and raincoat no matter when you travel, just in case.

"Everything You Could Want"
Score
4.0 / 5
Plymouth is a great location to stay that is just outside of Minneapolis, but still easy to make it downtown. Plymouth has restaurants, malls, coffee shops, parks, even upscale grocery stores--literally anything a guest could want. If you stay in a Plymouth hotel you'll want a car because many things are just outside of comfortable walking distance, but the prices are substantially lower in the west metro.
