Originally known as the Hassan Township, the community developed a clustering of houses, a post office, St. John's Episcopal Church, a school, and a town hall by the late 1800s. Today, an altered school, a church, and Hassan town hall remain. The area flourished because it served as a local hub and the Territorial Road that crossed through Hassan provided easy transportation access to Minneapolis and surrounding areas.
Rogers still serves as a key gateway between the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota. It delivers a combination of urban services and amenities with rich rural landscapes and wide-open natural areas, along with an abundance of parks and recreational destinations. It's also revered as an attractive place for families, and in 2013 it was recognized as the “Best Place to Raise Kids in Minnesota” by Bloomberg Businessweek.
In 2012, the annexation of the surrounding Hassan Township into Rogers became complete, making it official since first being proposed in the 1970s and increasing the town's population.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Rogers, MN?
The best time to visit the city of Rogers and the surrounding Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area is in the summer, from June to August. Temperatures sit around 80 degrees with not too much humidity, making it a great time to comfortably explore and participate in the area's outdoor activities. However, the summer is Minneapolis/Roger's peak tourist season, so be prepared to pay more than usual for flights and hotels. Key summer events include Twin Cities Pride, Rock the Garden, the Minneapolis Aquatennial, the Uptown Art Fair and Powderhorn Art Fair, and the Minnesota State Fair.
If you want to avoid the crowds and high prices, consider planning a trip in the spring or fall. April to May and September to October are the best times, as March and November tend to be cold already. During these times, hotels tend to be more reasonable as long as you avoid college graduation weekends in May. If you're coming during the spring, don't forget to check out popular events like the Food & Wine Experience, Art in Bloom, and the Soundset Festival. In the fall, be sure to participate in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and the Zombie Pub Crawl.
If you are planning to venture to the area during the winter, be sure to book refundable tickets just in case your flight is canceled due to snow or other inclement weather. Great attractions during the winter include the Holidazzle and the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. Visiting during the winter allows you to experience the true community feel of the town. Rogers also hosts a Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony in mid-December if you are around during that time.
