The city has gone through many different phases. At one point, it was known as the Tomato Capital of the World. Early immigrants to the area were prosperous tomato farmers. The railway that was constructed in the early 1900s made it easy and accessible to ship the tomatoes throughout the United States. The First Tomato Day Celebration occurred in 1927 with over 5,000 people in attendance. The festival continued bringing in crowds for the annual tomato fight up until the 1940s when the salt water crept in and started ruining the crops. The tomato industry disappeared soon after that.
The city soon evolved into a thriving antique market, and is now known as the Antique Capital of the South. Downtown Dania Beach is now home to over 100 antique stores and shops and brings in visitors from all over the world. Antique Row houses many antiques, but the buildings also offer historical significance as well. Most of the buildings are still standing and maintain their same design and integrity as when they were built in the early 1900s.
