What are the things to see and do at Angola, Indiana's nearby Pokagon State Park?
Pokagon State Park is located just 5 miles north of Angola and is one of the area's biggest attractions. The park was named after 19th century Potawatomi chief Leopold Pokagon and his son Simon Pokagon. Pokagon is said to mean "the rib," which refers to the protective shield around important organs in the body. Both Chief Pokagon and his son earned reputations as potent "shields" and advocates for their people, the Potawatomi. The tribe remains tied to Northern Indiana to this day.
The park was created by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, with work done from 1934 to 1942. Their beautiful stonework and log structures remain today, giving the park a rustic character that is wholly unique.
The landscape of Pokagon State Park, with its wetlands, lakes, forests, and meadows, is the product of glacial melt up to 15,000 years ago. For this reason, Steuben County boasts more lakes than anywhere else in the state. The abundance of water, from Lake James to Snow Lake, offers visitors ample opportunities for watersports, including fishing, swimming, and boating, and beautiful views for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and picnic-goers, too.
You can enjoy Pokagon in all seasons, from cross-country skiing to ice fishing, sledding, and tobogganing. The toboggan run operates on weekends, Fridays through Sundays, starting after Thanksgiving and running through February. You won't regret making the trip to Pokagon for the chance to toboggan over an exhilarating 90-foot total drop, at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.
Trine State Recreation Center, formerly known as Winghaven and later, Oakhill Conference and Retreat Center, has just undergone a major overhaul and unveiling in 2013. Visitors can now enjoy the new boat rental facility, public fishing pier, and welcome center. Much of the former resort land has also been reclaimed and restored to wetland and natural preserve.
If you'd like to host an event at Pokagon, the park offers extensive meeting and conference facilities. You can visit the nature center, rent a paddleboat, rowboat, or pontoon, book an escorted ride at the saddle barn, or simply visit the playground. Hikers will find that Pokagon offers everything from short and easy trails to moderate and somewhat rugged trails. Whichever you choose, the varied landscape will offer plenty of interest along the way.
Come to Angola for the natural beauty and lake lifestyle, or simply come with an open mind, ready to live the small-town life for a while. You'll enjoy every minute of your escape to Angola, Indiana.
