General Anthony “Mad” Wayne built the fort during the Northwest Indian War in 1794 and situated it where the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers meet. Although the fort is no longer in use, the location is marked with a pair of cannons placed outside the city library. The city's name comes from a quote attributed to both General Wayne and Charles Scott, a Wayne supporter: “I defy the English, Indians, and all the devils of hell to take it.”
